Departmental Overview
UC Berkeley's University Health Services (UHS) is looking for a licensed clinical social worker to work with a team of talented professionals in their Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) unit, and to serve as a mental health Social Worker for the UC Berkeley Undocumented Student Program.

University Health Services (UHS) located at the Tang Center, serves the UC Berkeley campus by providing fully accredited primary and urgent medical care, sports medicine, mental health, innovative health promotion and health insurance services to students, as well as a variety of faculty and staff health programs and services. UHS employs over 300 career and contract staff. CAPS is a highly utilized, comprehensive, student counseling service that assists students with a wide range of concerns, including academic success, life management, career and life planning, crisis management, and emotional and psychiatric illness. The Undocumented Student Program (USP), a component of the Centers for Educational Equity and Excellence, practices a holistic, multicultural and solution-focused approach that delivers individualized service for each student. The academic counseling, legal support, financial aid resources, and mental health support provided by USP helps students develop the unique gifts and talents they each bring to the university, while empowering a sense of belonging. Responsibilities
The Social Worker will work directly with undocumented students through counseling, drop-in consultation, groups, and other programming (e.g. workshops, healing circles). The Social Worker will also work closely with all USP staff to help identify students who might need support. By having a full-time Social Worker become an integrated USP team member, we will be able to provide undocumented students with a holistic model of support by which their academic, social, and mental health needs will be supported. Out of the roughly 500 undocumented students at Berkeley, we estimate that close to 200 of these students will receive mental health support via one-on-one counseling or through wellness workshops developed by the Social Worker and USP staff.

The Social Worker is expected to work collaboratively with USP staff members in the development of program services and activities for undocumented students. The Social Worker will work with the USP mental health coordinator and the USP program director to examine and address institutional mental health obstacles and play a key role in advocating for undocumented students on campus and in the community.

Work hours will include some evening hours as these are common for student programming.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical:
  • Performs diagnosis and psychotherapy on a full range of cases that are not pre-screened.
  • Professionally responsible for the soundness and validity of recommendations and services, but is expected to seek advice from senior specialists on unusual or uniquely complex client responses or on problems outside their area of expertise.
  • Gathers, analyzes, prepares, summarizes and monitors the status and progress of individual cases and projects
  • Functions as a resource and may offer consultative support to CAPS staff and trainees on cases
  • Perform diagnosis and assessment for clients involved in U-Visa, Asylum, and other forms of legal support and provide written reports when appropriate.

    Community outreach:
    Supports USP mental health coordinator's efforts to:
  • Develop specialized programs for undocumented students.
  • Present psychoeducational workshops and wellness programming for students
  • Provide drop-in consultation to students who are considering counseling
  • Provide consultation to faculty and staff regarding student concern

    Required Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with providing time-limited counseling and psychotherapy, group counseling, evaluation, diagnosis and crisis intervention services.
  • Experience with community-based interventions and trauma-informed counseling approaches.
  • Advanced knowledge of multicultural and diversity issues and experience working with diverse populations
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, standards and ethics of professional conduct.
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including public speaking and workshop delivery.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with diverse student groups and staff members within CE3 and at the Tang Center
  • Ability to conduct complex analysis and develop and present recommendations and course of treatment.
  • Knowledge of electronic/medical records systems.

    Education/Training:
  • Masters degree in Social Work
  • Current, valid license in California as a social worker, or if licensed in another state, would need to be licensed within 6 months of residence in California.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Clinical experience with undocumented and/or immigrant communities.
  • Clinical experience working with African Diaspora, API, Latinx, or SWANA communities.
  • Experience performing psychological assessments for U-Visa and Asylum cases
  • Experience working with first generation, low income, underrepresented, underserved, queer and/or trans students of color
  • Experience creating community based wellness resources (posters, materials, etc.) to distribution
