Job Details and Requirements:



Reporting to the Vice President for Advancement, the Assistant Vice President for Development (“AVP”) serves as the chief development officer, leading and mentoring the staff in the offices of leadership giving, planned giving, institute relations, athletic fundraising and international fundraising. Reporting to and in partnership with the Vice President for Advancement, the AVP will oversee solicitation assignments and fundraising travel;  lead the day to day implementation of the fundraising component of a shared campaign strategy; and establish and ensure policies and procedures are followed as they relate to harnessing the philanthropic potential of the college’s loyal constituencies. The AVP will work closely with Advancement Operations, Alumni & Parent Engagement, and Strategic Communications in the management of the donor life cycle and execution of the overall campaign strategy.






As directed by the Vice President and approved by the President and CMC Board of Trustees, plan and manage the fundraising component of CMC’s comprehensive campaign effort. Develop and implement an overall strategic plan for fundraising that supports the three pillars of the campaign to achieve the fundraising targets and overall goal of the largest campaign in liberal arts college history. 

Drive the execution of the strategic campaign plans through monitoring of metrics that allow for a strong pacing through the prospect pipeline, incorporation of planned giving through a blended gift strategy, and emphasis on continuing the growth of CMC’s participation rate.

Coordinate and leverage the involvement of Strategic Communications in donor messaging, external communications and social media.

Coordinate and leverage the involvement of Alumni & Parent Engagement through events, engagement and volunteer management.

Work closely with Advancement Operations to leverage the strength of research, the constituent database, and prospect identification and management strategies.

Provide consultation to the Vice President on all campaign related matters.

Manage a personal portfolio of key donors and donor prospects; actively engage in the cultivation and solicitation of major contributors and campaign leadership.

Provide creative leadership in prospect identification and strategy implementation to increase gift resources.

Oversee the Office of Planned Giving to increase gift resources through expanded alumni estate planning and through researching and designing a plan for internally housed donor advised funds.

Oversee the Office of Institute Relations in support of its work in identifying board members for the 11 research institutes and centers and in securing additional permanent funding for their faculty and student research and programming.

Collaborate with the Office of Strategic Initiatives and Institutional Philanthropy in developing strategies and materials to fulfill funding objectives and support leadership giving officers.

Strategically deploy office resources in developing a team or individual project approach to provide leadership, mentoring and management opportunities to junior advancement professionals to address challenges as they arise, such as international, athletic and institute fundraising.

Provide staff support to the College Advancement Committee and future campaign committees. Other duties as requested.

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s degree is required.  Advanced degree encouraged and preferred. 

EXPERIENCE:  10 plus years of direct fundraising and management experience, with demonstrated success in both achievement of goals and progressive responsibility in managing a staff or office(s).  Direct experience with campaigns and working with senior administrators, board members and faculty is required. 

LICENSES:  A valid driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:  Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

Requires excellent and demonstrated goal-oriented management skills.  Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and donor-centered.

Must have ability to lead, motivate, work creatively and develop consensus with advancement colleagues, volunteers and with members of the academic community.

Requires strong interpersonal skills and an ability to interface professionally with alumni, parents, administration, faculty, board members, and students.

Must be able to interact with donors in a way that reflects positively on the college.  Must be sensitive to donors’ interests and possess a thorough understanding of the development process.

Requires demonstrated superior organizational skills, an ability to work independently with minimal direction, and an ability to work well with others. 

Requires persuasive development writing and strong analytical and organizational skills. 

Requires knowledge of selective higher education development activities and processes.

Must understand and communicate the mission and history of the College’s liberal arts environment.

Knowledge of Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge software and the Blackbaud Net Community, or experience with similar relational database programs. Thorough knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.



REQUIRED HOURS:  The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday.  Holiday, weekend and evening work hours will be required.  Travel will be required.  Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.  This is a 12 month position.

CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:  This is a full time, 12 month, benefits-eligible, exempt position.
