Lecturer Pool - Department of English - College of Letters & Science
The Department of English at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of outstanding temporary instructors to teach Reading and Composition courses, lower and upper division courses, and/or sections of lower and upper division courses, should openings arise. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed.

The pool will remain in place for one calendar year; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond that time must reapply. Appointments are non-tenure, renewable, and typically part-time and can range from 33 percent to 100 percent, depending on the number of courses taught. Typically, the Department reviews applications for fall teaching in May, and applications for spring teaching in November and for the summer in March (if applicable). The final date for applicants will be April 3, 2020. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, and appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

Responsibilities may include (but are not limited to): Teaching one or more sections of a lecture course (or courses) and attend all lectures, advising students and holding regular office hours, assigning grades, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and maintaining a course website. Generally, independent courses meet for a total of 3 hours per week; each section of lecture courses meets for a total of 1 hour per week (lecture attendance adds 2 hours).

Minimum Basic Qualifications: Completion of all Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) requirements except dissertation by the time of application.

Additional Qualifications (by start date): College-level teaching experience by time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) in English Literature or a related field.

For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.

We may contact you in the second stage of review to request documentation verifying experience teaching at the college level (if relevant); sample course descriptions and syllabi; and proof of degree.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with teaching experience. The starting minimum full-time equivalent salary is $54,738 in accordance with the current Unit 18 Lecturer salary scale and its provisions.
