A Senior Instructional Designer supervises an agile instructional design team to accomplish assigned projects. They apply instructional design and project management knowledge to support the mission of MSU Denver. They coordinate with the instructional media team to handle responsibilities for work on courses, modules, and course curriculum for all delivery modalities.

Duties/Responsibilities

50% Personnel Management and Project Management
•Coordinates resources and leads personnel in their Instructional Design team (3-4 FTE and 1-2 student employees) to ensure that scope, goals, schedules, and deliverables are met for each project
•Manages and prioritizes large, complex, and high-impact instructional design projects using industry standards and best practices in project management
•Works to understand and address common concerns and challenges faced by faculty and departments
•Develops, reviews, implements and updates instructional media processes and procedures
•Leads efforts to create systems and processes that utilizes continuous improvement methodologies, quality pedagogical approaches, and empowers data-driven decision-making
•Collaborates with the larger Center for Teaching, Learning and Design to integrate instructional design and effective teaching campus-wide
•Coordinates with the Associate Director of Instructional Design to plan staffing levels, recruit, interview, select, employ, train and coach assigned employees
•Maintain employee work schedules including assignments, training, paid time off, telecommuting, and cover for absenteeism
•Attends to the professional development of the members of their Instructional Design team
•Works to develop a welcoming, collaborative environment across the entire CTLD

40%Instructional Design
•Applies instructional design best practices across a variety of projects, including some work at all levels and all stages within different projects
•Works with complex source material and within detailed development cycles, keeping both the process and the content highly accessible, streamlined, and focused for collaborators and stakeholders
•Designs, develops and implements electronic instructional materials (e.g., animations, interactive elements, simulations, video, etc.) using content authoring and management tools (e.g., Adobe Suite, Camtasia Studio, Blackboard Collaborate, HTML5, Moodle, SCORM, etc.)
•Designs and implements modern instructional design and engaging user experiences while incorporating ADA Section 508 guidelines
•Consults with faculty on the use of research-based instructional strategies (e.g. gamification, interactive applications, animations, information visualization, etc.)

10%Research, Outreach and Other Duties
•Maintains professional expertise as both a manager and instructional designer by researching and sharing new professional knowledge
•Conducts individual and group training in the use of educational techniques and technology that may be used to enhance student-learning experiences
•Represents MSU Denver at local, regional and national conferences in related fields
•Supports events, conferences and workshops sponsored by the Center for Teaching, Learning and Design
•Other duties, as assigned

Required Qualifications

•Bachelor’s Degree in educational technology, instructional design, teaching, information systems, information technology, technical communications, or instructional technology. (Two years of work experience may be substituted for each year of education.)
•Experience as an instructional designer
•Experience managing projects and people in a higher education setting
•Experience with learning management systems from multiple perspectives and roles
•Experience using content authoring and management tools (e.g., Adobe Suite, Camtasia Studio, Blackboard Collaborate, HTML5, Moodle, SCORM, etc.)
•Knowledge and experience applying federal and state law related to usability and accessibility (ADA Section 504 and 508) in instructional design
•Experience working with subject matter experts and other stakeholders in developing instructional materials.
•Experience developing, implementing and delivering training programs
•Experience with technical writing and generating reports
•Experience with public speaking and giving professional presentations

Preferred Qualifications

•Master’s Degree in educational technology, instructional design, teaching, or related field
•5 years of agile instructional design experience in higher education
•5 years of experience with public speaking and giving professional presentations
•3 years of experience using MSU Denver’s current Learning Management Systems (e.g., Blackboard Learn)
•Experience running conferences or similar events
•Experience applying course quality improvement using national standards (e.g., Quality Matters)
•Experience with graphic design in an instructional design context
•Knowledge of research-based instructional strategies and experience in discussing those with faculty
•Experience using analytics to foster student learning (e.g., Blackboard Analytics)
•Experience developing scripting, interactive web tools or other applications.
