The University of Miami’s Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing (CSTARS) is currently seeking a systems engineer to augment the ongoing satellite operations with the design, development and testing of unmanned aircraft systems. The role includes working in a small team and develop requirements and designs of the unmanned system architecture, to execution of detailed design, fabrication, programming, integration, hardware and software verification and validation, flight testing, product development, manufacture, and support of the complete unmanned aircraft system and all its subsystems. Team disciplines include vehicle flight performance analysis and detailed design, structural design and analysis, circuit design including DC power systems, avionics, software design and development, guidance, navigation, control, algorithms and sensors for autonomy, component and subsystem testing, as well as flight testing in harsh environments. The role also includes the development of system documentation, and the training and support of customers.

The ideal candidate will have the desire and ability to provide significant impact for both the evolution & enhancement of deployed systems, and the research & development for emerging systems. The developer in this position researches, designs, and develops drones with different payload characteristics and explores capabilities to endure harsh environments to complement CSTARS research and satellite operations.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline (such as electrical or aerospace engineering, applied physics, computer science).
Minimum 1-3  years of directly related software programming work experience.
Remote control aircraft pilot.
Valid FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot License.
Due to security requirements, position requires US Citizenship.
Working knowledge includes a mix of:
•    UAS or Autonomous Vehicles
•    Robotic System Guidance
•    Navigation and Control
•    Ground or Airborne Mission Systems
•    General Aerospace Flight Control or Cockpit Avionics Systems
•    Ground Stations
•    Payload Control
•    Model-Based Design and/or Model-Based Test
Proficiency in Windows and LINUX operating systems.
Deep knowledge in a software language such as C/C#/C++, Java, Python and Qt.
Design of embedded control software and complex algorithms.
Design of graphical user interface and communications software.
Experience in using at least some of the following technologies: ArcGIS Server, GeoServer, MapServer, GDAL, PostGIS, Oracle Spatial, SQL Server Spatial, OpenLayers, OpenStreetMaps, Google Maps API, ArcGIS SDKs and APIs.
