THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE

The University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine includes 8,000 faculty members, 850 staff, and 7,000 students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate medicine, rehabilitation sciences, medical radiation sciences, physician assistant education, doctoral and professional graduate programs. THE TEAM


The Division of Comparative Medicine administers the animal care program for the Faculty of Medicine. Its mission is to provide an excellent animal care program built on professional dedication to animal welfare and to support the research endeavor by serving as an important resource of in-vivo expertise and best practices.


THE OPPORTUNITY

The Director, Division of Comparative Medicine is responsible for overseeing the operation of the animal care program in the Faculty of Medicine. The incumbent ensures that all animals used in research and teaching in the Faculty of Medicine and other Health Science Faculties at the University, are cared for in accordance with the Animals for Research Act (Ontario) and guidelines of the Canadian Council on Animal Care. The incumbent provides guidance and expertise to researchers and staff, collaborates on research projects, develops applications for grants in collaboration with scientists to obtain funding for research and develops policies and standard operating procedures. The incumbent is responsible for developing and administering the University of Toronto training program for staff and researchers. The incumbent provides veterinary care and oversight while providing advice and expertise to researchers on the development of animal models, experimental design, determination of study endpoints, lab animal care and biology, and lab animal medicine. The incumbent represents the Faculty of Medicine in dealing with the media, the public as well as private, professional and government agencies in all matters relating to the animal care program in the Faculty of Medicine.



Campus(Minimum)

Education:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with a license to practice in Ontario. Post-graduate training in Laboratory Animal Medicine and/or Veterinary Pathology or a relevant graduate degree. Board Certified or eligible to sit the examinations of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists or the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.

Experience:
A minimum of ten years’ experience in a senior position in a major academic animal care program. Experience with operational management, including financial and human resource management. Experience building relationships with and providing expert consultation to a wide variety of stakeholders, both internal and external to the organization. Strong leadership/managerial experience including the ability to inspire, motivate and mentor staff. Experience managing staff, preferably in a unionized environment. Business Development experience is an asset.

Skills:
Proficiency with MS Office including Excel, Word and PowerPoint. HRIS skills, Competence with database/information systems.

Other:
Excellent oral and written, communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated decision making ability with respect to organizational structure, staff and management. Demonstrated strategic planning, change and project management skills. Discretion and confidentiality in dealing with sensitive issues. Demonstrated judgment and problem solving skills.
