Under the leadership of the Executive Director of the NOVA Foundation, the Director of Operations is responsible for directing the Foundation Services team, including but not limited to the day-to-day operations of the financial management, information management, donor relations, prospect research, and business administration functional areas of the of the Northern Virginia Community College Educational Foundation (NOVA Foundation).
Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Director of Operations is charged with creating and implementing long- and short-term operational/financial plans; building and managing a cohesive and collaborative team; and, developing and administering budgets to ensure effective NOVA Foundation operations. The Director of Operations participates in the recommendation, creation, and administration of operational policies, procedures and processes to govern and guide the work of the NOVA Foundation.
Minimum Qualifications•Bachelor’s degree in a related field or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
•Several years of managerial experience.
•Significant experience in an institutionally related foundation.
•Master’s degree or JD
•Significant experience in grants compliance and compliance reporting.
•Significant experience with non-profit fund accounting.
•Experience in development within a higher education environment.
•Advanced knowledge of foundation administration, finance and business operations.
•Advanced knowledge of all relevant state, federal and accounting guidelines and their relevance to fundraising and foundation operations (IRS, GASB, FASB and UPMIFA).
•Experience with accounting, constituent and fund management systems.
•Proficiency in developing and refining systems and procedures that ensure efficiency and compliance in office operations and support and advance philanthropic activities.
•Advanced knowledge of fundraising procedures and activities with particular emphasis on information systems, development operations, prospect research, and office operations.
•Knowledge of principles and practices of college administration.
•Ability to generate, review, verify and reconcile financial reports.
•Ability to communicate effectively, both orally (one-on-one, as well as in large and small group settings) and in writing.
•Competency working with a complex donor database (ideally Raisers Edge), MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint, and facility with Internet applications.
•Competence with Crystal Reports.
•Proven project management skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and time effectively.
•Highly motivated with the ability to contribute positively to a fast-paced, priority-shifting, and cooperative work environment.
•Ability to maintain confidentiality of donor information.
•Excellent analytical and interpersonal skills and a demonstrated understanding of volunteer management, development databases and the use of technology in fundraising.
•Maintains and exhibits the highest standards of ethical conduct.
•Understanding of and appreciation for a team-oriented management style.
This position is funded with non-continuous or non-recurring funding and is subject to continuation based on fiscal year funds and the needs of the college.
