Overview

The Department of Religion Academic Manager works closely with the Department Chair to execute policy and strategic direction for the operation of the department and participates in short and long-term planning for department operations and activities. The manager has oversight of 6 programs of study. The Religion Department has 19 full-time faculty members who focus on the scholarly study of religion, 45 graduate students, and approximately 1000 undergraduates taking courses in the department each year.

 

While the chair establishes the academic and intellectual direction of the department, the academic manager enacts the chair's vision. The manager is responsible for ensuring that the faculty, students, and staff in their academic department have the necessary assistance to carry out their academic, research and administrative duties. The academic manager reports directly to the department chair, with a secondary reporting relationship to the associate dean for academic affairs in the Office of the Dean of the Faculty.

Responsibilities

The three most important aspects of the academic manager’s responsibilities are financial management, staff supervision, and academic management.

 

Budget and financial management: The manager develops the administrative budget for the academic department under the broad direction of the chair. The manager oversees and directs the administrative and financial affairs of the department and is responsible for careful and appropriate management of the administrative allowance, endowed or restricted funds, and grants or sponsored research. The manager provides regular and timely analysis and projections of the available funds to the chair.

 

Staff supervision: The department manager supervises the hiring, performance reviews, merit increase processes of the administrative and technical staff. The manager ensures clear delineation of staff responsibilities, coordinates staff activities, and ensures all deadlines are met.

 

Academic and Administrative Management: The academic manager supervises the administration of the teaching component of departmental activities, ensuring that the academic department meets all deadlines for University offices. The manager is responsible for administration of a variety of teaching and administrative processes fundamental to the functioning and success of the academic department. The manager is also responsible for oversight of events, oversight of departmental communications, and special projects.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 4-6 years in administrative management position in a higher education setting or similar nonprofit organization
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with budget management.
  • Flexible, adaptive to changing needs; prioritizes tasks effectively.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately with good attention to detail.
  • Sound judgment; creativity and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work well alone and/or with others.
  • The ability to collaborate, listen well and to take the lead in problem-solving and consensus-building.
  • Experience at Princeton University preferred, including experience with Princeton systems such as the Information Warehouse, Labor Accounting, and Concur.
