About the PositionThe Director of Research Development leads and manages the research development enterprise, with strong focus on building and enhancing the extramural funding of SJSU research and training programs. Director's leadership role, which at build-out will involve 2-4 direct reports, comprises the establishment of vision and priorities for the Research Development enterprise. Collaborates with faculty and the Division of Research and Innovation leadership on research development program strategies and goals, long-term planning, and policy and procedures. In partnership with the SJSU Research Foundation, the director works closely with college deans and associate deans of research, chairs, and faculty to develop and implement near-term strategies for new or emerging research initiatives, both single-investigator and multi-investigator, and multi-disciplinary initiatives. Has independent responsibility for large, complex research grant programs/initiatives. Includes oversight and coordination of research development programs, including program development, planning and evaluation, peer review of proposals and applicant relations, grant application and award management, and synthesis and dissemination of research findings. Has budgetary responsibility for the research development enterprise.
Required Qualifications- PhD
- Extensive track record with or at a federal funding agency
- Prior grant writing experience
Preferred Qualifications- PhD in Engineering or Science
- Prior research development experience in academic or non-profit institution
- Experience coordinating and managing complex proposal submissions
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Thorough knowledge of relevant federal program priorities such as National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense (DOD), National Science Foundation (NSF), US Department of Education (USDE), Office of Naval Research (ONR), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and US Department of Justice (DOJ)
- Proven ability to cultivate federal program officer relations to gain perspective on funding priorities and trends
- Demonstrated expertise in building collaborations between academia, industrial and / or governmental agencies
- Strong communication, supervisory and management skills
- Must be able to travel to Washington, DC for in person meetings and conferences
- Demonstrated excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, particularly within academia
- Expert negotiation skills
