Departmental Overview
The Division of Social Sciences in the College of Letters & Science is the largest academic division on campus, with an annual budget of approximately $130M, 270 permanent faculty FTE, and undergraduate enrollment which averages over 31,000 per semester. It is also among Berkeley's most heterogeneous divisions, with faculty studying every dimension of the human experience. Its academic departments include African American studies, anthropology, demography, economics, ethnic studies, geography, gender and women's studies, history, linguistics, political science, psychology and sociology. The division is also home to the International and Area Studies and Cognitive Science programs, the Social Sciences Matrix, D-Lab, and several related research units. The Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration serves as the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Chief of Staff, and Chief Financial Officer for the division.
As Chief Administrative Officer, the Assistant Dean is responsible for overseeing the general operations of the division, partnering with divisional and departmental leadership to achieve strategic objectives, and implementing administrative policies and procedures. The Assistant Dean represents the division at the campus level, brings matters of concern to the attention of campus leadership, and ensures managers are kept informed of campus initiatives, policy changes or any other activities that may impact their units.
As Chief of Staff, the Assistant Dean provides strategic guidance, advising and decision support to division leadership on matters related to short- and long-range strategic and resource planning and high-level analyses of new program development. The Assistant Dean also coordinates the activities of divisional staff engaged in a range of functions and supports the launch of new programs and initiatives.
As the division's Chief Financial Officer, the Assistant Dean manages the development and execution of the division's multi-year and annual budget, advises the dean on key budgetary decisions and advocates for the needs and priorities of the division. The Assistant Dean partners with division and departmental leadership to increase revenues and optimize the utilization of available resources.
