Campus Life and Inclusive Excellence (CLIE) is the student affairs division of the University of Denver. CLIE includes Housing and Residential Education, Academic Resources, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Health and Counseling, and the Center for Multicultural Excellence.

Position Summary

The Mission of the Office of Student Engagement is to foster holistic student development. We strive to build community and enrich the whole person through creative collaboration, meaningful relationships, and innovative programming. We are able to accomplish this through engagement via the functional areas that comprise the department including: Registered Student Organizations, Undergraduate Student Government, Graduate Student Activities, University of Denver Programming Board, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Marketing and Communications, Spirit and Traditions, Hallmark Events, and The Hub Operations & Management.

The Assistant Director is responsible for the day to day management and oversight of registered student organizations (RSO), including but not limited to the approval of their events, management of the contract process, development of and compliance with risk management plans, as well as the oversight of the student organization advisor and student organization student leader development program. Additionally, this position has direct oversight and advisement of the University of Denver Programming Board (DUPB) and all of the major annual events that are planned by DUPB. The Assistant Director spearheads campus collaboration in the areas of student programming, policies, procedures, and works with individuals and campus partners on various efforts. This position works in partnership with various campus departments including: Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, Facilities, Risk Management, Shared Services, and others in regards to the student organizations and event management process. The Assistant Director supervises two graduate assistants. The position supports the Director in providing leadership for the Office of Student Engagement in establishing and fulfilling its mission and strategic priorities, and in conducting daily operations and responsibilities.

This is an exciting time to join the University of Denver, the Division of Campus Life and Inclusive Excellence and the Office of Student Engagement. The Office of Student Engagement has undergone a sweeping revamping to better serve students, as well as lead the way in dynamic programming. The Assistant Director will need to come in ready to build relationships, develop a strategy and process to support student programmers and student leaders, and eager to implement programs and events that build community and inclusive excellence on campus. We are looking for a self-starter, experienced student affairs professional, high-energy, effective communicator, and consensus builder.

Essential Functions

  • Inclusive Community Wide Programming & Advising:
    • Directly advises the University of Denver Programming Board (DUPB) in programming university-wide DUPB annual events such Winter Carnival, MusicFest and May Days and supports the advisement of their six-student lead programming committees.
    • Develops and implements innovative, engaging late night and weekend programming to encourage the development of a vibrant student community on campus.
    • Supports the Associate Director in the development and implementation of meaningful and inspiring student traditions and rituals which includes annual signature programs that anchor student engagement on campus. Such traditions must include the diverse identities of our entire community.
    • Sits on the Campus Life and Inclusive Excellence Programming Council, Homecoming Planning Committee, Orientation Planning Committee, and other division and university committees.
  • Student Organization Leadership & Management:
    • Works with the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Student Organization Committee on policy development and implementation as it relates to the student organization registration and renewal process.
    • Works with undergraduate student organizations in the areas of risk management, contracts, event approval, collaboration, budgeting, etc.
    • Advocates for the undergraduate student experience by serving as the student advocate in the areas of contracts, risk management, business services, etc.
    • Provides oversight and implementation of the student organization advisor development program and frequent communications with advisors.
    • Develops and executes student organization leader professional development series and maintains frequent communications with student officers.
    • Supports the Director in the management of the student engagement software platform for all student organization and event related processes.
  • Operations Management:
    • Follows DU policies and procedures as they relates to event planning and management on campus and the use of the student activity fee.
    • Responsible for knowing and understanding University of Denver policies and procedures such as the Honor Code, Alcohol Policy, Student Comptroller and USG finance procedures, and other policies as it pertains to student organizations.
  • Supervision:
    • Participates in the hiring, training and supervision of graduate assistants in the Office of Student Engagement, as well as undergraduate student work-study and/or hourly student positions.

Supervisor Duties

Participates in the hiring, training and supervision of Program Administrators (graduate assistants) in the Office of Student Engagement, as well as undergraduate student work-study and/or hourly student positions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to design programming that will cultivate a strong sense of community for a diverse student body.
  • Have a strong understanding of student development theories, specifically the relationship between students social identities as they relate to programming goals and learning outcomes.
  • Have a strong understanding of the relationship between the built-environment and student experience.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Familiar with utilizing emerging technologies, software, and applications to promote and enrich student activities, organizations and clubs, and student engagement overall.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity efforts embedded into the foundation of all programming and initiatives

Required Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Higher Education or a similar field
  • 1-3 years of experience (grad and/or professional) within student affairs in a post-secondary institution
  • 1-3 years of experience in supervising graduate and/or student staff
  • 1-3 years experience advising student leaders
  • Experience in event planning and programming
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed to support student/departmental events

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising full-time professional staff
  • 3+ years, post bachelors degree, full-time professional experience within student affairs/multicultural student affairs in a post-secondary institution
  • Experience with designing innovative assessment tools to evaluate the impact of student engagement initiatives
  • Experience with streamlining complex processes, collaborative approaches to creating buy-in, and lean organizational designs

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Evenings and weekends as required.
