Job FieldThe Department of Spanish and Portuguese, in the Faculty of Arts and Science, at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Latin American Literature and Culture. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, and the anticipated start date is September 1, 2019. 
 

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Hispanic Languages and Literatures, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and research in the field of Latin American Literature and Culture. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests will complement our existing departmental strengths. To that end, we seek candidates with a research focus on: South American literatures and cultures, with emphasis on Venezuela and Peru; Latin American testimonial literature; Cultural manifestations of resistance from the 19th to the 21st centuries; and Politics of Culture and Media in Latin America. The successful applicant will have experience in teaching Latin American Studies in a Canadian University.


The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding and competitive, externally-funded, research program in support of the research and teaching missions of the Latin American Studies Program at the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.


Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by the submitted research statement, a record of publications in top-ranked venues in the areas described above, presentations at significant conferences, grants awarded for work in the field, and strong endorsements by referees of high standing.


Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier, a teaching statement, sample course syllabi, and the teaching evaluations submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.


Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Applicants must submit a cover letter of no more than two single-spaced pages, a current curriculum vitae, a research statement outlining current and future research interests, one writing sample (of no more than 20 pages) relevant to the position, and a teaching dossier including a statement of teaching philosophy, sample course syllabi, and teaching evaluations.


Applicants must also arrange to have three letters of reference sent directly by the referee via email (on letterhead and signed) to spanport.chair@utoronto.ca by July 31, 2019.
