Assistant Professor
Controlled Environment Horticulture

We seek an outstanding scientist who will advance food production systems in Illinois through the use of controlled environments and protected culture in specialty crop food production. This position will develop a nationally recognized research program focusing on the use, adaptation, and modification of high tunnels, automated greenhouses, container farming, vertical farming, hydroponics, aeroponics, or aquaponics to promote high-value food production. The successful candidate for this applied research and teaching position will have a strong background in intensive horticultural production in protected environments, with specialized knowledge in plant physiology, physiological ecology, plant breeding, or other related discipline in the quantitative study of plant responses to protected environments. With the dependence of protected culture on sensors, environmental monitoring, lighting, and resource conservation, the incumbent will benefit from the strong technical collaborations with engineering disciplines across campus. The selected candidate will be expected to develop courses in horticultural topics related to controlled environments and protected culture and participate in student training and education at both the undergraduate and graduate level. In the college of ACES at the University of Illinois, we believe that scientific communication through classroom and online teaching complements Extension messaging. A Ph.D in horticulture, plant or crop sciences, plant breeding, or related discipline is required. Post-doctoral experience demonstrating experience in independent or team-focused research is desirable. The successful applicant must also demonstrate excellent interpersonal communication skills, ability to collaborate with diverse colleagues across and beyond our campus, and a willingness to work with industry stakeholders and the general public.
