General Purpose
Under direction, leads, assigns, monitors and reviews the work of department staff, and performs law enforcement functions to provide a safe environment for students, staff and the public such as traffic and field patrol, dispatch, investigations, crime prevention, college and community relations, training and related services and activities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs armed patrol of district properties and adjoining premises on foot, bicycle, and other department vehicles to maintain security and order, enforce laws, traffic and parking regulations, and District and campus rules and policies while utilizing sound judgment under adverse and stressful conditions.
  • Responds to and investigates calls for police service regarding criminal, non-criminal, or emergency related activities such as crimes against persons and property, accidents, and health concerns to make observations and determine actions to be taken.
  • Performs routine police officer tasks such as issues citations, makes arrests, takes fingerprints including LiveScan, administers first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)/automatic external defibrillator (AED), responds to emergency medical calls, and completes all necessary forms and reports.
  • Administers physical roadside sobriety and "intoxilizer" tests when necessary, controls and mitigates people under the influence of drugs or alcohol or other potentially hostile situations.
  • Restrains and subdues individuals by means of baton techniques, control holds, or restraining devices as necessary and documents these actions.
  • Safely and appropriately maintains, calibrates, inspects, and utilizes police weapons and equipment such as firearms, conducted electrical weapons (Tasers), batons, non-lethal weapons, alcohol screening devices, bicycles, and police vehicles.
  • Serves as lead for an assigned shift, prepares and administers briefings, assigns duties and site assignments.
  • Inspects personnel to ensure uniforms and equipment present professional appearance.
  • Inspects buildings to ensure security and makes recommendations when deficiencies are detected.
  • Monitors, assists and instructs officers in handling cases and investigations as needed.
  • Reviews department activities and procedures to identify problems, develops solutions and recommends modifications for improving services as appropriate.
  • Assigns, monitors, and reviews the work of staff involved in patrol, investigations, crime prevention, community relations, dispatch, property, evidence, and related services and activities.
  • Performs crime scene management and assumes incident command responsibilities for critical incidents.
  • Interprets, conveys, and assists in the implementation of agency policies, procedures, and methods.
  • Ensures staff has clear guidelines of responsibility and fosters an environment of cooperation and teamwork.
  • Prepares, processes, and maintains a variety of written reports, notes, logs, correspondence, legal documentation and other records pertaining to assigned activities including daily activity reports.
  • Receives and reviews all crime, incident, and arrest reports, required forms, summons, records, and related documents prepared by staff to ensure accuracy, content, timely completion and advises staff on making revisions.
  • Assists in the evaluation process by providing feedback to management on the performance of personnel.
  • Prepares memos of concern for management approval and meets with personnel to review.
  • May assist in the investigation of personnel matters by gathering facts, collecting evidence, and interviewing witnesses.
  • Assists staff in follow-up investigations, including gathering of evidence, questioning of witnesses, and locating and apprehending suspects.
  • Files criminal cases with the District Attorney's office, participates in the preparation of cases going to trial and appears in court to present evidence and testimony as needed.
  • Coordinates personnel in response to emergency and hazardous situations and evaluates need for response of additional personnel or special response units.
  • Contacts and coordinates with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of offenders, training, and statistical crime reporting.
  • Maintains cooperative working relationships with college and district staff, outside organizations, the community, and other law enforcement agencies.
  • Explains, interprets, applies, and remains current on local, state, and federal laws, district policies, procedures and answers questions from students, staff and the public.
  • Performs crime prevention activities to include surveillance patrols and participating in community outreach programs that may include speaking and presenting to citizen and school groups, and other public service efforts.
  • Attends various district and college committee meetings, as designated by management, to represent the police department.
  • Participates in continuous Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) required training to comply and enhance law enforcement skills.
  • Coordinates the registration of sex offenders and the maintenance of registrant picture, record, and other information as required by Penal Code 290.
  • May be assigned to a specialty unit (ie. Bike Patrol, Rangemaster, Property/Inventory Management, Field Training Program Supervisor) and attend additional POST trainings as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Employment Standards / Minimum Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications
    Education & Experience
    High School diploma or GED, and graduation from a POST Police Academy. Three (3) years of experience as a sworn peace officer performing patrol, police, investigative, personnel protection, and property protection duties. Experience as a lead or supervisor is preferred.

    Licenses & Certificates
    Valid Driver's License.
    Valid POST Basic certificates.
    Valid First Aid and CPR/AED certification.
    Satisfactory completion of a California Police Officers Standards and Training P.O.S.T. Certified Supervisory course within the first year (12 calendar months) of employment.
    Complete a POST Campus Law Enforcement Course within one year of the date of hire.

    Special Conditions
    Applicants must pass a POST approved background investigation, a medical examination and psychological examination.

    Knowledge of:
  • Modern police practices and methods and principles of crime prevention.

  • Principles of human behavior and behavior modification strategies and techniques for the purpose of identifying at risk people.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus, color discrimination, and 20/20 vision with corrective lenses. Lift, carry, and drag supplies and equipment weighing at least 165 lbs. Required to run, jump, or climb based on operational needs demanding quick movement on a variety of surfaces, terrain, and obstacles including rocks, walls, fences, barricades, ditches, etc., ambulating quickly and sure-footedly.

    Work independently with minimal supervision. However, during patrol, officers may experience increased decibels while driving with siren, during crowd control or civil unrest, sporting events, or during a combat situation where hearing protection is not an option.

    The assessment process will also include a competency assessment (50% weight) and an oral interview assessment (50% weight). Of those achieving a passing score on the competency assessment, only the 15 highest scoring candidates, plus ties, will be invited to the oral interview assessment. Passing score is 75% out of 100% on each assessment section.

    Candidates hired in this position are required to work various shifts (day shift, swing shift, midnight shift) as well as weekends and holidays. Schedule changes may occur based on seniority and department coverage. The SCCCD Police Department is staffed on a 24-hour basis.
