The William & Mary School of Education currently invites applications for an assistant or associate level, tenure-eligible position in counselor education that will have primary responsibility for coordination of a new Military and Veterans Counseling specialization within our Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. We are particularly interested in applicants who have prior U.S. military experience and/or a comprehensive understanding of the challenges facing active duty and veteran military service members and their families. The faculty coordinator will oversee all aspects of the Clinical Mental Health & Military & Veterans Counseling specialization including (but not limited to) admissions decisions, online and on-campus course development and instruction, and internship site identification, approval, and supervision. We are also interested in applicants who can blend responsibilities in counselor education with the pursuit of a focused research agenda on military and veteran mental health issues. In close physical proximity to multiple military installations as well as the state capitol and Department of Veterans Services, William & Mary ideally is located to provide faculty with service and research opportunities involving active duty military and veteran populations.
This counselor education faculty position is part of the School Psychology and Counselor Education (SPACE) Department. In addition to the Clinical Mental Health & Military & Veterans Counseling concentration, the department offers Master of Arts in Education concentrations in Clinical Mental Health & Addictions Counseling, School Counseling, and Marriage and Family Counseling and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Counselor Education and Supervision. The new concentration was made possible through funds appropriated by the Virginia General Assembly in an effort to better serve the mental health needs of its military and veteran constituents. The concentration will begin being offered online in August 2019 and on campus in August 2020. The School of Education is housed in a state-of-the-art teaching facility. The successful candidate will be expected to teach online and on-campus courses and supervise student counselors in the graduate program in Counselor Education with particular emphasis in the Clinical Mental Health & Military & Veterans Counseling concentration. Responsibilities will also include the development and revision of coursework specific to the Military & Veterans concentration. The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing working relationships with military installations to establish field experiences for students. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to supervise or contribute to doctoral dissertations. The William & Mary School of Education faculty maintain a two course per academic semester teaching load, and William & Mary expects active faculty participation in school and institutional governance. Faculty must be able to interact effectively with masters and doctoral-level graduate students as well as departmental and School of Education colleagues and affiliated community representatives.Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must meet qualifications outlined by CACREP to be considered a core faculty member, including:
(a)Direct military service or a strong association with military service
(b)An earned doctorate in Counselor Education & Supervision from a CACREP accredited institution;
©A clear and well-articulated counselor educator identity;
(d)Current licensure and/or ability to obtain counseling licensure in Virginia;
(e)Direct experience in clinical mental health counseling service delivery;
(f)Record of active engagement in counseling research, teaching, service;
(g)Excellent communication, collaboration, organization, and negotiation skills.
Preference will be given to those who have:
(a)A record of direct military service;
(b)Experience teaching, developing, or implementing online counseling coursework;
©Prior experience working with master’s level counseling trainees;
(d)Prior experience supervising master’s level counseling trainees in a mental health setting;
(e)Prior experience with CACREP accreditation and the 2016 Standards
(f)A strong diversity and social justice orientation;
(g)Prior college, university, or agency administrative experience.
