Senior Database Administrator

Position Description

Position Summary:

The Senior Database Administrator is responsible for the design, development and implementation of enterprise applications and databases. This employee coordinates the design, sizing, tuning, maintenance, support, and recovery of critical databases, and works closely with other internal team members to ensure optimum system performance and reliability. The Senior Database Administrator will maintain multiple database and application environments including development, testing and production systems. This employee will also ensure correct configuration and synchronization of multiple Microsoft and Linux development platforms and systems. Responsibilities also include: providing technical guidance to the other unit staff; acting as CMS advisor and trainer to the web staff and participation with the Assistant Director for Application Development and Director in strategic planning for application development and database services for the Law School community.
 

Reporting Relationships:

This position reports to the Director of Information Technology. The Senior Database Administrator will lead complex technology projects with up to five participating Information Technology staff members.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops multi-dimensional data models and performs planning of architecture, functions, modules, recovery, standards, and implementation.
  • Assists in design of logical security for locally administered databases.
  • Provides primary support for the daily operations of database systems and serves as liaison to customers.
  • Plans, coordinates, and administers database systems including base definition, structure, documentation, requirements, and operational guidelines and protection.
  • Designs cross-platform database integration solutions.
  • Performs debugging of complex database problems and design issues.
  • Coordinates work on a variety of development and maintenance projects in Microsoft and Linux environments
  • Works closely with developers and business users on system requirements, analysis, design, and implementation.
  • Provides guidance to technical staff on concepts and best practices.
  • Creates ad-hoc reports utilizing multiple data sources.
  • Designs and maintains the content management system for the Miami Law website. Acts as advisor and trainer to web staff in use of the CMS.
  • Provides strategic advice on architecture and technology of database design, use, and administration.
  • Participates in the testing and implementation of new or enhanced database systems.Establishes and maintains databases for user testing purposes and production.
  • Analyzes and determines information needs and elements, data relationships and attributes, data flow and storage requirements, and data output and reporting capabilities.
  • Researches and evaluates alternatives and recommends solutions for business issues.
  • Participates with department Director and other senior staff in strategic planning for new technology resources to support the Law School community.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures, and safeguards University assets.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering and ten (10) years of experience in a technical computer support position.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of experience in database development, utilizing Microsoft SQL Server and/or MySQL
  • Experience with PHP. Python, C++, Java, Javascript and Drupal
  • Excellent customer service, written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to function successfully to produce required results with minimal supervision and to demonstrate dedication, motivation and professionalism in a multi-tasking team environment.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles.

  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.

  • Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.

  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.

  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.
