Requirements

The Master Patrol Officer provides services to protect the life, well-being, and property of students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries, and others through policing, patrol, event security, investigation, and emergency response as outlined in general orders, special orders, and assistance as directed by a supervisor. S/he performs patrol functions and specialized assignments according to all special and general orders in the protection of life and property of Georgetown University. Directly reporting to the Patrol Sergeant , the Master Patrol Officer has additional duties that include but are not limited to:
  • Provides police and security services while protecting life and property, performing police patrol duties on foot, bicycles, and motor vehicle to include responses to all emergencies.
  • Enforces all United States, District of Columbia laws and University rules and regulations, supporting the university community by establishing and maintaining an environment in which all community members can go safely about their varied activities in the best interest of the university.
  • Accurately and thoroughly prepares incident reports, safeguarding information and evidence to ensure successful follow up and resolution.
  • Manages preliminary investigations, directing UPO I-II campus police officers and assisting the investigation of incidents as necessary.
  • Supports and provides assistance to persons who have been victims of crime, attending court whenever necessary, regardless of other commitments.
  • Directs emergency response activities without supervision and gathers and reports intelligence related to public safety and crime prevention.
  • Conducts crime risk analysis within the campus assigned area, identifying and analyzing recurring community problems and working to identify responses to them.
  • Prepares and coordinates tasks to be accomplished within the campus assigned area on a weekly basis, as well as prepares weekly evaluation reports describing task accomplishment related to community policing goals and objectives.
  • Conducts speaking presentations on topics, which have been identified through surveys and analysis without supervision.
  • In furtherance of the university's higher education objectives, becomes well acquainted with members of the University community and performs routine desk and office duties, when necessary.
  • Provides mentoring and on the job training of new hires as a Field Training Officer (FTO), providing oversight of a shift or subordinate ranking officers.
  • Serves as a Field Training Officer (FTO) to field train and mentor and new recruits, providing oversight of a shift in the absence of a shift supervisor or when instructed to do so by any supervisor.

Qualifications
  • Five or more years of security related/law enforcement/military experience
  • At least 21 years of age and a U.S. Citizen with a Special Police Officer Commission in the District of Columbia or sufficient training and experience (as determined by the Security Officers Management Branch of the DC Metropolitan Police Department) to immediately obtain a commission
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license with no violations in the last three years and able to pass Georgetown University driver's certification
  • Ability to pass a detailed background investigation.
  • All applicants are subject to a written test, a report writing test, drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to University specifications, and extensive psychological testing
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification in Arrest Control Tactics, Baton, and OC-based Aerosol Subject Restraint and other assigned training subjects
  • Ability to successfully complete all other departmental trainings' to include Crisis De-Escalation Train-the- Trainer or equivalent, Field Training & Evaluation Program or equivalent, Basic Instructor Training Program or equivalent, First Line Supervisor Training or equivalent, and Instructor and Lesson Plan Development Training Program or equivalent
  • Willingness to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department, including rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to departmental needs
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification within promotional evaluation period (for internal promotions) or probationary period (for new hires) as a Field Training Officer
  • Proficient using computers including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email and/or the ability to learn these applications

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in community policing
  • Advanced knowledge of criminal and civil law and police policies and procedures
  • Excellent grammar, speaking, and writing skills, including report writing
  • 20/20 vision or corrective lens (including contact lens) to see far and near objects, estimate distance, and distinguish colors
  • Knowledge of telecommunications equipment along with administrative and clerical skills
