General Description

Under the Direction of the Food Service Manager, the Food Service Assistant will assist in the preparation of food and beverages; serve as cashier and cash controller; set up serving areas; clean surfaces, equipment, and utensils; assist in maintaining records as directed.

This position is assigned to the Tulare Campus, Monday through Thursday 20 hours per week.

Job Duties

Job duties of the Food Service Assistant include:

  • Assist in preparation of cafeteria and snack bar food items; wrap hamburgers, chicken sandwiches and fish sandwiches.
  • Prepare specifically assigned food items such as salads, sandwiches, soups, beverages and condiments in accordance with franchise guidelines, rules and regulations.
  • Clean and sanitize counters, equipment and tables; operate various washing machines to assure cleanliness and sanitation of pots, pans, utensils and equipment.
  • Set up serving tables; monitor food supplies during peak service periods; restock and bus kitchen utensils and equipment; restock beverage machines.
  • Serve students and staff in courteous and friendly manner.
  • Store and rotate food supplies and equipment according to established guidelines.
  • Operate a cash register, including sales and support of educational materials/supplies; count money as directed.
  • Train and provide work direction to student workers.
  • Assist in grill and fry short-order cooking as directed; assist in preparing foods for special events and catered functions.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory and other routine records as assigned
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities
The hiring committee is seeking evidence of the following:

Knowledge of:
  • Food service equipment, machinery and utensils.
  • Food preparation in large quantities.
  • Sanitation and safety requirements.
  • Food substances and dangerous combinations such as mayonnaise, tuna and ham salad.
  • Stocking and storage of various items related to the operation of the cafeteria and snack bar.
Ability to:
  • Assist in food preparation, serving, cashiering and storing.
  • Set up serving areas and clean surfaces, equipment and utensils.
  • Assist in maintaining records.
  • Read and understand operations manuals and recipes and write altered recipes in an understandable manner.
  • Communicate with student workers.
  • Organize activities during peak rush periods.
  • Perform math calculations necessary in altering recipes and making change.
  • Utilize kitchen equipment and utensils properly and safely.
  • Operate a cash register.
  • Lift items in a safe manner.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Meet schedules and time lines.
  • Train and provide work direction to others.

Organization

College of the Sequoias is a two-year California community college offering educational and enrichment programs for the residents of its district in Tulare and Kings counties. The college was established in 1925 and moved to its current 62-acre main campus site in Visalia in 1940.

In addition to the campus in Visalia, COS operates a full-service center in Hanford that is also home to the college's police and fire academies.

COS also opened its Tulare College Center in January 2013. It is a full-service college center and the home of COS' agriculture program
