This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The academic advisor reports to the Director of the Program, but primarily works independently. The advisor works with students from the time they are admitted to the program (either pre-IB, or IB) until they graduate. The advisor provides materials to students, holds orientations for current and prospective students, and continually coordinates with other campus units such as Financial Aid, Admissions, Enrollment Services, the International Student Center, and individual faculty members. The advisor makes suggestions for changing procedures relating to the required study abroad and internship programs, and to academic advising. The advisor must use his or her familiarity with the rules for graduation and the IB program in order to offer advice and propose solutions for unique student circumstances. In addition, the advisor provides information to parents, community college counselors, and prospective students. The advisor keeps records of a sensitive nature and must therefore be able to maintain confidentiality.

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $4,519 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,304 - $6,120 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills

  • Proficiency with internet browsers and Microsoft Office (including Access).
  • Student advising experience.
  • Experience working in an academic setting.
  • Experience presenting to diverse audiences of varying size.
  • Experience providing outreach services to students.
  • Bilingual skills in one of the preferred languages of International Business to include Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, and Korean.
  • Experience with SIMS-R software
  • Master's degree.
