Overview

Research and Development Manager is responsible for managing multiple large multi-institution and interdisciplinary research groups in PI Ramaswami’s Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Research Group. This includes research related to India’s urban infrastructure relevant to Princeton’s Center of Global India. The individual will draw upon deep expertise related to the social-ecological-infrastructure framework in order to strategize and implement large multi-institution interdisciplinary research projects. The role will also work to maintain, and develop, new partnerships to sustaining & expand Ramaswami’s research group and on-going NSF grants. The role also has a community and policy facing front, in order to translate research into applied tools for city application, all of which require deep expertise at the doctoral level. Further, the role will include conducting and leading original research related to the urban food systems in the US and India

Responsibilities

(25%) Implement and manage research strategy of large NSF-grants held by PI Ramaswami

·         Develop and implement interdisciplinary research strategy across large teams

·         Ensure the outputs of research coordination meetings are on track

·         Help to identify gaps in the overall research of food systems research and larger urban systems grants and research group

·         Develop protocols & strategies for data management and showcasing, working with USpatial (Univ. of Minnesota office), or equivalent data office at Princeton to ensure that data is collected in a usable format across the whole SHCN, requiring a deep understanding of diverse and complex urban data sets across disciplines and formats and experience with large data set programs such as ArcMap, R, and Excel

·         Supervise data specialist responsible for management of databases, model, and web development

·         Supervise development of Global City Data Website—a website to showcase urban datasets, with contributions from multiple disciplines

 

(20%) Develop Partnerships & future research project: sustaining & expanding Ramaswami’s research group

·         Contribute to the preparation of large multi-million $ NSF proposals (ERC, STC, C-Accel) to secure on-going funding

·         Identify potential funding streams that will aid in growing the work of Ramaswami’s research group and the sustaining of the SHCN as an entity

·         Work to develop SHCN into an independent entity after SHCN funding ends

·         Work to continue growing the reputation of Ramaswami’s research group both in research & policy discussions

·         Develop and maintain external partnerships to advance research and convergence work with cities and city organizations (i.e. ICLEI, UNEP)

(15%) Lead community-facing applied products for convergence

·         Manage relationships to facilitate the creation of convergence products (example: the Minneapolis Food Action Plan)

·         Manage and build relationships related to infrastructure and food systems in India, that support PI Ramaswami’s role as faculty director of the Center for Global India

·         Translate urban systems research into tools for policy makers

·         Supervise researchers in Ramaswami’s group participating in creation of convergence documents/products, particularly those working in food systems

 

 

 

(30%) Conduct original urban food systems research

·         Lead and contribute to multiple research projects/publications, advancing the field of urban food systems and, more broadly, urban sustainability research

·         Design, plan, implement, and evaluate complex, multifaceted research projects/systems, remaining current on technological and scientific developments in  the field of urban food systems

·         Formulate and implement short- and long-range goals for the operation of the research group and provide leadership as needed

·         Work to establish the research group’s recognition both nationally and globally, as a leader in urban food research both within academia and in global policy discussions

·         Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication and work with journal editors/reviewers in the publishing process

·         Support PI Ramaswami in coordinating work of PhD, Masters and staff researchers related to the urban food system including preparing and overseeing research plans for students, post-docs and other researchers within Ramaswami’s research group

 

(10%) Budget & contract management of multiple, large multi-university research grants

·         Coordinate subaward contracts of large NSF grants, aligning budget and scope of work across schools, working with PU grants office. Currently this includes the SRN (24 PIs in 8 schools) & INFEWS (6 PIs in 3 schools)

·         Lead annual reporting to NSF (or other funding organizations to fulfill reporting requirements)

·         Manage budgets working with PI Ramaswami, to align expenditures. Currently this includes a $12 million SHCN-SRN budget, $2.5 million INFEWS budget & S&CC sub-award (portion of $2.5 million)

·         Work with financial services to ensure that subawards are dispersed to 8 SHCN-SRN schools & 3 INFEWS schools (and other grants as awarded)

·         Supervise staff responsible for tracking and submitting expenses

Qualifications

Essential qualifications

 

+Bachelor's Degree in a related science or engineering field;+Interest in, and knowledge; of energy-related technologies;+Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the proven ability to convey scientific knowledge across technical and general populations;+Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with a diverse population comprising Princeton University community members, corporate executives, funding agency representatives, and external administrative staff;+General knowledge of university research activities and sponsored research principles.
