Overview

The Director Wireless Network Architecture and Engineering is responsible for designing, engineering, and overseeing the implementation of the campus wireless network that enables faculty innovation and research and supports the IT services for teaching, learning and administrative operations. The strategic leader in this role will use their expertise in current and emerging wireless trends to continuously evolve Princeton’s network toward a world-class, future-proof, wireless-first network.

 

The leader in this role will manage a team of technical staff who are responsible for the wireless network infrastructure and services. They will also work in close partnership with the teams responsible for the wired routing and switching infrastructure and services. The director also works collaboratively with other leaders in OIT and colleagues across the University to identify needs and develop strategic plans for wireless network services.

 

This director position reports to the Associate CIO, Enterprise Infrastructure Services, in Princeton University’s Office of Information Technology (OIT).

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of what Princeton researchers, faculty, students and administrative staff need from the campus wireless network today and in the future, to inform the optimal wireless network design
  • Continually define the multi-year, campus wireless network roadmap
  • Build and lead a team of wireless network experts
  • Partner with key technology stakeholders (e.g. cybersecurity specialists, software and application owners, and high-performance computing technical staff) to implement the wireless network design
  • Serve as a wireless network strategic advisor to technical teams throughout the organization and across campus
  • Provide campus-wide oversight and governance for wireless network control standards
  • Design a reliable, scalable, secure and contemporary wireless network that optimally addresses current needs, as well as anticipates future needs
  • Deliver a network that leverages next-generation concepts and best practices to meet the campus goal of providing a wireless-first network (such as automation, software-defined network configuration, and intelligent monitoring)
  • Develop and report on wireless network reliability and performance metrics to enable network optimization and continual improvement
  • Define and implement a wireless network operations and support model that is aligned with IT Service Management (ITSM) principles
  • Coordinate and collaborate with partner technology support and operations teams to ensure reliable, customer-focused, end-to-end wireless support
  • Ensure thorough documentation of network standards and processes
Qualifications
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience delivering increasingly complex IT infrastructure and network services, including at least 5 years with staff management responsibilities
  • 5 or more years of experience engineering wireless networks
  • Strong experience leading sizable IT efforts through all phases of the IT service lifecycle: strategy, design, implementation, and operations
  • Strong experience designing, installing and configuring medium to large 802.11 networks
  • Experience leading and managing technical teams and developing and retaining talent
  • Relevant certifications in network technologies (such as CCNPx, CCIEx, CCDA)
  • Relevant wireless network certifications (such as CCNP Wireless, CWNA, CWSP, CWAP, CWDP)
  • Demonstrated expertise in 802.11, LTE and DAS wireless technologies and standards, as well as emerging technologies (such as 5G, WiFi 6)
  • Information security and data privacy advocate

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with Aruba WLAN
  • Prior work experience in higher education

Education

 

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in an IT related discipline. Master’s degree in a related field, preferred.
