Nature of Work

This position will source and develop ideas for campus-based and local stories and write article content. In addition, this position will post, monitor, and analyze content across social media channels. Examples of duties include brainstorming topics and events that might interest readers, or attending local events in a Reporter capacity, where this position will conduct interviews. This position reports the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students and works 19.5 hours per week maximum during the academic year.

Essential Duties
  • Responsible for identifying and developing ideas for potential content in the form of news stories, local event coverage, feature articles on various topics, and campus affairs
  • Produce and/or coordinate strong media, including video, still photography, and graphics for a wide variety of audiences
  • Responsible for writing articles and headlines based on local and campus-based news
  • Responsible for posting, monitoring, and analyzing video- and photo-based news content to social media and online platforms
  • Develop a network of contacts, both on campus and in the local area, in order to ensure topical, up-to-date, and source-supported stories
  • Perform all necessary fact-checking and ensure ethical treatment of sources and interviewees as part of the Associated Press’s News Values and Principles
  • Meet weekly with the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students and digital newspaper staff
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications and Training
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours
  • Experience using social media platforms
  • Must possess strong communication and organizational skills
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and pass a motor vehicle background check
Preferred Qualifications and Training

Experience with computer programs such as Word, Excel, iMovie, and the Adobe suite, such as InDesign Illustrator, and Photoshop
