Nature of Work

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is designed to directly support students by regularly helping them learn course material, prepare for tests, and learn effective study strategies. SI provides support to students in high-risk courses, which promotes increased passing grades and reduced course withdrawals. SI data provides evidence that the program is an important component in retaining students. SI is designed to help students master material in high-risk courses while increasing their learning strategies and study skills. Student performance is improved by combining “what to learn” with “how to learn.”
The Supplemental Instruction Leader attends every class he/she is assigned to and conducts at least two SI sessions during the week. The SI Leader is also responsible for planning, coordinating and conducting the sessions as well as collecting and recording all data pertinent to program participation and evaluation. The SI Leader is a model student who interacts closely with the instructor and encourages all students to participate in class and in SI study sessions.
This is a 19-hour per week, student assistant position which may include tutoring hours. Student employees are not to work during their scheduled class time even if the class is canceled or dismissed early. The schedule for the person in this position will be assigned by the supervisor. The schedule is subject to change between semesters or as needed. The Supplemental Instruction Leader is directly supervised by the Coordinator of Academic Services.

Essential Duties
  • Attend all class sessions.
  • Plan and conduct two SI sessions during the week
  • Communicate with the professor & students about SI sessions
  • Incorporate collaborative and active learning & teaching methods.
  • Collect and record qualitative and quantitative data from each session
  • Administer mid-term and end-of-semester evaluations.
  • Maintains an image of a model student
  • Attend mandatory meetings and training workshops
  • Ability to interact positively with a diverse student population
Minimum Qualifications and Training
  • Must be enrolled in six credit hours.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty and students
  • Attended at least one semester at CCGA
  • Dependable, reliable and able to work with confidential information
  • A written letter of recommendation from faculty
  • GPA 3.0 or higher
  • Excellent customer relation skills
  • Must maintain a B in subject(s) for tutoring or SI
Preferred Qualifications and Training
  • Demonstrate effective study strategies
  • Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge and experience of various teaching and learning styles
