Job Description Summary

Lab TA’s will assist the instructor and help students follow proper technique and safety while conducting experimentation.

Specific Duties

Teaching assistants will:
• Come prepared and on time or earlier to their respective lab with proper PPE and with knowledge of the experiment and ready to answer student’s questions.
• TA must remain proactive in labs and observe/keep an eye on students to ensure that they are following proper laboratory techniques and safety. They must remain vigilant at all times and keep an eye on the student’s use of the chemicals during the experiment to prevent or catch cross contamination.
• TAs must communicate with Lab instructor/ Lab Coordinator/Lab Managers regarding any concerns with the chemicals or lab safety.
• Ensure the Maintenance of the lab’s cleanliness during their respective lab and conduct lab clean up (putting away equipment or cleaning glassware, keep chemicals in order, etc.), and sometimes help set up (prepare waste containers or pipettes, help with preparation of chemicals, etc.)
• Grade assignments within a reasonable turnaround time

Minimum Qualifications

• Successful completion of CHEM 311/312 with a grade of B- or better.
• Mandatory attendance at the weekly lab meeting.
• Committed to working both Fall and Spring semesters for a minimum of 10 hours/week.

Preferred Qualifications

• Recommendation from a Chemistry instructor
• Initiative driven
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Basic knowledge of Excel
• Dependable, reliable, and self-sufficient

Benefits Summary

Employees are eligible for the following benefits:

One hour of Paid Sick Leave for every 30 hours worked, with a maximum accrual of 24 hours of Paid Sick Leave per year and capped at 48 hours.

University of La Verne Defined Contribution Retirement Plan – can contribute employee voluntary contributions, excluding wages derived from federal work study funds.

In accordance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), employees who work an average of 30 or more hours per week, will be eligible for medical coverage through the University of La Verne.

Covered under the University of La Verne Workers Compensation Insurance.
