UNIVERSITY OF REDLANDS

POSITION: Tenure-Track
APPOINTMENT: Open Rank
DEPARTMENT/SCHOOL: Business Analytics & Management Science, School of Business
AVAILABLE: July 1, 2020
POSTING DATE: July 12, 2019
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Open until filled

DESCRIPTION: The School of Business at the University of Redlands welcomes applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Business Analytics, Management Science, and Operations at the open rank, starting July 1, 2020.

The University of Redlands (www.redlands.edu) is recognized as a premiere regional liberal arts and professional education institution, situated on a picturesque campus in the city of Redlands, within one hour of Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Joshua Tree and Lake Arrowhead. The School of Business offers innovative undergraduate and graduate degree programs at the main campus in Redlands and at several locations throughout Southern California.

The Redlands School of Business offers a variety of coursework in business analytics, data-driven decision-making, management science/operations research, and operations management at the graduate and undergraduate level. The School aspires to broaden its portfolio of graduate programs by launching additional niche concentrations in Business Analytics and Data Science, culminating in graduate programs in these areas. The Redlands MBA has a one-of-its-kind concentration in Location Analytics and the MBA is offered both online and on-ground. The School’s Spatial Business Initiative (www.redlands.edu/SBI) and Center for Spatial Business (www.redlands.edu/CSB) both offer excellent opportunities for collaborative research projects in location-based analytics intersecting with business, marketing, information systems, operations, supply chain management, logistics, big data, and other areas.

Responsibilities of this position are research, teaching and service. The selected candidate is primarily expected to teach courses in Business Analytics, Management Science, Operations Management, and related areas. Preference will be given to applicants with solid teaching experience (on-ground and online). Those with cross-functional teaching as well as research interests are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates must have an active research agenda or demonstrated potential for research in the area of analytics, broadly defined. Research interests spanning optimization, simulation, big data (social media, Internet of Things), machine and deep learning, artificial intelligence, data science, and location analytics, in relation to business as well as other areas (such as, healthcare, sports, etc.) are welcome. Programming experience and knowledge of analytics softwares is highly desirable. Industry experience in business analytics, operations management, and information systems while not required, is also desirable. In addition to teaching and scholarly activities, faculty also participate in School- and University-wide service, and interact with the southern California region's business community.

Students in the university’s School of Business span the greater southern California region comprised of Los Angeles, San Diego, Riverside, Orange, and San Bernardino counties. Students usually have a vast array of professional and life experiences and often include veterans. Applications should describe in their letter of interest their teaching philosophy and how their teaching and/or scholarship will advance critical thinkers and problem-solvers. A diversity statement is also required as part of the application documenting any academic and/or professional experience with teaching, advising, mentoring a diverse body of students, as well as providing consulting to diverse business, government, and non-profit organizations.

POSITION CRITERIA: Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Business Analytics, Management Science, Operations Research, Operations Management, Industrial Engineering, or a related field. ABD candidates will be considered but must have a completed Ph.D. before the anticipated start date of July 1, 2020. Hires beyond the Visiting Assistant Professor level must be justified through significant and sustained teaching, along with an advanced research agenda. All applicants should have a record of teaching achievement in their functional area and vibrant interest in cross-functional teaching to non-traditional, professionally employed learners, and business education within the context of liberal arts and science disciplines. Since the School of Business operates without discipline-based departments, collegiality and communication skills are essential.

INQUIRIES: Inquiries can be directed to Dr. Avijit Sarkar, Prof. of Analytics & Operations, at avijit_sarkar@redlands.edu. Information meetings can be requested by email at the following conferences where faculty from the School are expected to be in attendance: AMCIS (Aug 15 – 17, Cancun Mexico), INFORMS Annual Conference (Oct 20 – 23, Seattle), and DSI (Nov 23 – 25, New Orleans).

TO APPLY: Applicants should submit by email: (i) a letter addressing the required and preferred characteristics including a statement of teaching philosophy, (ii) curriculum vita, (iii) teaching evaluations, (iv) research statement, (v) copies of transcripts (unofficial copies will suffice), and (vi) a diversity statement. In addition, candidates must request three letters of recommendation, to be emailed by recommenders directly. All application materials should be emailed to search coordinator Mary Dupree at SB_Employment@redlands.edu with the Subject Line: TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION IN BUSINESS ANALYTICS. Mailed applications should be addressed to Analytics Tenure-Track Faculty Search, c/o Mary Dupree, School of Business, 204 Hornby Hall, University of Redlands, 1200 E. Colton Ave., Redlands, CA 92373-0999. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

The University of Redlands is a private, independent liberal arts university centrally located in the heart of southern California. Situated in the area east of Los Angeles known as the Inland Empire, the beautiful Redlands campus is within easy traveling distance of snow skiing, hiking and climbing to the north, some of the world’s best beaches to the south, Palm Springs and Joshua Tree to the east, and the urban culture of Los Angeles to the west.

Ranked 12th among regional universities in the West by U.S. News & World Report, Redlands offers 50 undergraduate programs as well as graduate programs in business, communicative disorders, education, geographic information systems and music.

The University of Redlands serves approximately 5,000 students in its primarily undergraduate residential College of Arts and Sciences, as well as its School of Education and School of Business, which offer graduate programs at eight locations across southern California in addition to the main campus. The School of Continuing Studies offers non-degree program credentials and course opportunities.

Redlands blends liberal arts and professional programs, applied and theoretical study, traditional majors and self-designed contracts for graduation. For a select group of highly motivated, self-driven students, the progressive Johnston Center for Integrative Studies allows such inclined undergraduates to negotiate their own course of study with a faculty/peer committee, receiving narrative evaluations rather than letter grades.

The Master of Science in Geographic Information Systems program is an intensive, one-year residential program that draws international acclaim, in part due to the close collaboration with Redlands-based Esri, the world’s leading GIS company.

Recognized for having one of the highest study abroad participation rates among our peers, Redlands students travel the world, choosing from more than 100 programs. Redlands’ Community Service Learning program receives national acclaim each year as our students complete over 120,000 hours of public service annually around the world.
