About the PositionReporting to the Senior Associate Athletic Director, the Assistant Athletics Director for Media Relations works independently to achieve specified outcomes. This position provides coordination and oversight to the Athletics Media Relations department in all aspects of the operation. The incumbent serves on the Director's Council; Handles multiple deadlines while working hours that include nights and weekends; Works closely with the Associate Athletic Director for Football Communications & Special Projects on limited football related media relations projects; and must have initiative and foresight on all new digital media avenues and best practices throughout social media and digital networks.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
-Effectively interact with local, regional and national media members representing print, broadcast, virtual and social media outlets.
-Coordinate, organize and prioritize media interviews for student-athletes, coaches and administrators.
-Recommend effective short-term and long-term strategies for student-athletes, coaches and administrators.
-When needed, serve as a department spokesperson to the media.
-Oversee game-day press row operations for all sports other than football.
-Oversee the production and creation of printed materials such as media guides, game programs, game notes and news releases for the department¿s intercollegiate athletics teams.
Required Qualifications-Bachelor's degree from an accredited four year college or university and/or equivalent training in related field of study
-Four years of progressively responsible full time administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative polices procedures, practices, or programs
Preferred Qualifications-Bachelor's degree in related field
-Experience in a college or university athletics media relations office or equivalent
-Demonstrated experience and proficiency in writing and desktop publishing
-Experience with website production
-Experience with sports statistical software programs
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities-Working knowledge of and ability to apply techniques, practices and principles related to communications in the media relations areas.
-Demonstrated strong oral communication skills. Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills.
-Knowledge of copyright and applicable laws pertaining to the media, publications and public relations.
-Working knowledge of sports software statistical programs created by Genius, StatCrew, GolfStat, Hy Tek and comparable companies.
-Ability to learn and apply NCAA, conference and SJSU rules and regulations related to outside interest groups.
-Working knowledge of and ability to apply techniques, practices and principle related to communications in the media relations areas.
-Ability to identify appropriate communication vehicles for appropriate athletics messages.
-Knowledge and understanding of still and video photography and various media forms, their outlets, applications and uses.
-Ability to effectively present ideas and concepts in written or presentation format and use consultative and facilitation skills to gain consensus.
-Working knowledge of desktop publishing and complimentary software programs to produce printed materials.
-General knowledge of standard office technology and systems, and software applications such as: word processing, spreadsheet, FileMaker Pro and database management.
-Ability to identify potential story ideas involving San Jose State student-athletes, coaches and administrators.
-Ability to coordinate high-profile home athletics events.
-Ability to train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction.
-Ability to work nights and weekends.
