Job Description

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The staff nurse practitioner senior is responsible for the provision of general medical care to eligible NAU affiliated individuals (students, employees and employee spouses). This position reports to the Medical Director.

TYPICAL DUTIES – DESCRIPTION:

This description is intended to indicate the kinds of duties and responsibilities that may be required of employees given this title. It is not intended to limit in any way the right of supervisors to assign, direct and control the work of employees under their supervision.

PATIENT CARE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide primary medical and mental health care through the evaluation and management of acute, sub-acute and chronic conditions within scope of privileges applied for and granted by the Credentialing and Privileging Committee.
  2. . Utilize appropriate, diagnostic resources in a cost-effective manner to assist in the evaluation and management of these health conditions. Utilize appropriate, pharmacologic modalities in a cost effective manner to treat identified health conditions. Provide patient education on health-related matters and healthy life-styles. Participate in 24-hour call (phone response only) in rotation with other providers.
  3. Provide consultant services to other health center personnel.
  4. Refer eligible individuals to community specialists when appropriate.
  5. Participate in the Saturday clinic assignments during the academic year in rotation with other providers. Collaborate with Counseling Services, Disability Resources, Residence Life, Student Life, EAW and/or NAU Police Department in creating, coordinating and implementing individual care plans for patients identified as needing comprehensive care.
  6. Arrange for patient care coverage when absent from health center.
  7. Document patient care related activities in the EHR in a clearly understood manner appropriate for the type of encounter.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Share patient care responsibilities in an equitable manner with the remainder of the medical staff.Work collaboratively with all health center personal to ensure efficient patient flow, quality patient care and excellent patient satisfaction.Participate in committees, provider meetings and other organizational activities as requested by the Executive Director or Medical Director.Participate in creation, coordination and implementation of policies and procedures as requested by the Executive Director or Medical DirectorParticipate in strategic planning and continuous quality improvement activities as requested by the Executive Director or Medical Director.Participate in the training of Nurse Practitioner, Athletic Trainer or other health care students as requested by the Executive Director or Medical Director.

 


Minimum Qualifications

Advanced practice nursing degree from an accredited nursing school and licensed to practice as an advanced nurse practitioner in the State of Arizona. The nurse practitioner senior must comply with the requirements for continuing education defined by the Arizona State Board of Nursing. Board certification from a nationally recognized certifying agency. Current CPR or ACLS training is required. Remain current in the field of college health and maintain board certification. Registration with the Drug Enforcement Agency and prescriptive authority required.

 


Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of evaluation plans and treatment of clients with a variety of illnesses.Skill in patient care.Skill in the use of medical equipment utilized in area of assignment.Skill in both oral and written communication.

 


Background Information

 

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

 

Finally, each year the Northern Arizona University Police Department releases an annual security report. The report is a result of the federal law known as the Clery Act and contains policy statements that address the school’s policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security including policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses. The report contains three years of data for Clery reportable crime statistics for the campus along with the most current year’s Fire Safety Report, which includes policy statements and fire statistics for Flagstaff on-campus student housing.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of employment.
