CampusWheelingIf other, please specifyPosition StatusPart TimeIf part time, hours per week20-29 hoursWhat you will do:The Learning Support Specialist plays a critical role in supporting NLU students and in doing so, the support specialist staff encourages students to take an active role in their education and empowers students to become independent, lifelong learners. The primary responsibility is to tutor students in the fundamental skills of writing and reading at the Wheeling campus. Tutoring occurs through one-on-one appointments and in small workshops utilizing various modes, including in-person, by phone, as well as via email and video conferencing software. The Writing specialist will help monitor and communicate the progress of students who are identified as below-level in their writing and reading skills and accurately track student tutoring usage. The Learning Support Specialist will also assist with a caseload of students on ADA accommodations and have an understanding of the diverse learning needs of students with disabilities, including how to support students with executive functioning challenges and writing anxiety.
Outcomes:The Learning Support Specialist will:
• Tutor for general education writing courses such as Beginning English Composition, Intermediate Composition and Effective Speaking.
• Collaborate with faculty to support at-risk students. Conducting classes at the beginning of each term, responding to faculty alerts, and providing embedded support in online courses.
• Completing intakes and providing support services for students who qualify for ADA accommodations. Monitoring and tracking caseload of students on ADA to provide tiered support.
Bachelor’s degree in English required.
