Assistant Professor, tenure-track in Off-Road Equipment Engineering (OREE).

The Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is highly ranked, with 19 tenure-track faculty members, approximately 370 undergraduate students in two majors, and 78 graduate students. ABE is one of seven departments in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES), and all ABE undergraduates obtain their degrees through The Grainger College of Engineering. The ABE Department has an annual budget of approximately $3.5M from recurring sources and another $2.2M in grants, contracts, and gifts. The University has nearly 50,000 students and nearly 2,000 faculty members. Located about 120 miles south of Chicago, the twin cities of Urbana and Champaign are vibrant and diverse, with a population of more than 110,000.

The ABE Department invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track position with approximately 50% teaching and 50% research responsibilities. We are seeking outstanding candidates with a record of excellence in the field of Off-Road Equipment Engineering (OREE) in the context of agriculture, food, energy, and the environment.

Teaching responsibilities include delivery of “classical” OREE courses comprising engine and tractor power, engineering off-road equipment, and machinery management. In addition, the successful applicant is expected to develop new course materials related to current topics in OREE that may be employed online.

Research responsibilities comprise the creation of an externally funded research program in which innovative solutions addressing urgent challenges in food/fiber and biofuel production are developed. The successful candidate is expected to work closely with The Grainger College of Engineering faculty through the Center for Digital Agriculture, on topics including, but not limited to, intelligent machines and implements, machine systems, agricultural automation (including robotics), machine vision applications, electro-hydraulics, and mobile app development. The candidate is also expected to work closely with faculty in the college of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences on topics including, but not limited to, high-throughput phenotyping, crop modeling, organic farming, remote sensing and drones, and data analytics. The candidate is also expected to collaborate with industry, in particular with those located at the University of Illinois Research Park.

The position requires a doctorate in Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field. The candidate is expected to demonstrate excellent speaking and writing skills, the ability and desire to work in interdisciplinary, interdepartmental teaching and research teams, the potential to attract competitive external funding, and the ability to publish high quality scholarly articles. The candidate is also expected to provide leadership outside of the university through extension relationships as well as through the American Society for Agricultural & Biological Engineers (ASABE) organization.

Academic Resources

Students have access to thousands of computer terminals in classrooms, residence halls, and campus libraries for use in classroom instruction, study, and research.

Research

Students and scholars find the University an ideal place to conduct research. The Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology is a model for interdisciplinary research, where eighteen research groups from sixteen University departments work within and across three broadly defined themes: biological intelligence, human-computer intelligent interaction, and molecular and electronic nanostructures. The University is also home to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).

Undergraduate Education

The University has a fundamental commitment to undergraduate education. Nearly 28,000 undergraduate students are enrolled in nine undergraduate divisions, which together offer some 4,000 courses in more than 150 fields of study.

Undergraduate admission is highly selective. In the 2001 freshman class, students in the middle 50% had ACT scores between 25 and 30 and ranked between the 83rd and 96th percentiles of their high school graduating classes.

The University enrolls over 9,000 graduate and professional students in more than 100 disciplines. It is among the top five universities in number of earned doctorates awarded annually in the United States.

Also integral to the University's mission is a commitment to public engagement. Each year about 65,000 Illinois residents participate in scores of conferences, institutes, courses, and workshops presented statewide. Research and class projects take students and professors off campus to share expertise and technical support with Illinois farmers, manufacturing firms, and businesses. In a typical year, student volunteers log more than 60,000 volunteer hours.

The Arts

A major center for the arts, the campus attracts dozens of nationally and internationally renowned artists each year to its widely acclaimed Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. The University also supports two major museums: the Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion; and the Spurlock Museum, a museum of world history and culture. 

Other major facilities include the multipurpose Assembly Hall (16,500 seats); Memorial Stadium (70,000 seats), site of Big Ten Conference football games; and the Intramural-Physical Education Building, one of the largest recreational facilities of its kind on a university campus.
