The Simulation Center Manager is responsible for providing leadership in the planning, analysis, implementation, and evaluation of simulation education and operations of the Jump Simulation Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Manager is responsible for ensuring simulation center processes support data-driven decisions in the development and execution of center objectives, including supervision of the Simulation Center Technician. The Simulation Center Manager works collaboratively with the Carle Illinois College of Medicine (CI MED) and the Grainger College of Engineering faculty and administration both internally and externally to drive educational outcomes and programs. The Manager will employ a high degree of judgment and independence to effectively solve complex problems, build strong internal and external relationships, deliver well designed processes and maintain a thorough and organized simulation and evaluation model. The Simulation Center Manager reports administratively to the Center’s two Co-Directors, and reports functionally to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the Carle Illinois College of Medicine for simulation education content.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Simulation Education Development and Assessment

  • Provide oversight to the development and evaluation of medical education simulation programs to ensure a positive learning environment that advances the learning objectives of medical education.
  • Provide curricular and assessment guidance for educational activities. Oversee data collection to evaluate student learning outcomes that comply with academic standards for medical education.
  • Work with the simulation education leaders within the Carle Illinois College of Medicine and the Grainger College of Engineering to manage the utilization of simulation resources to ensure fidelity of curricula and assessments involving simulation modalities. Enhance team and collaborative practice concepts with staff and simulation education leaders.
  • Manage the simulation evaluation and review process, including the design, maintenance, enhancement, and reporting of the return on investment model and LMS software.
  • Develop and lead courses for faculty and other stakeholders to work with simulation methods as a model of teaching. Provide both group and individual mentoring of best practices in simulation pedagogy to faculty and staff across all disciplines.
  • In collaboration with faculty, staff, and students, facilitate research and scholarly activities through use of simulated programs.
  • Work closely with the Simulation Center Co-Directors for development of external simulation programs.
  • Maintain a high level of awareness of changes in the education simulation industry and as appropriate recommend and implement changes to the simulation center.
  • Work closely with the Sim Center Co-Directors, the Associate Dean of the CI MED and senior leadership to prepare supporting documentation as required for Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation standards.
  • Ensure department alignment with organizational strategic goals and key results.

Center Administration

  • Develop and implement policies, procedures and practice standards consistent with simulation center mission and educational objectives.
  • Direct preparation of and review reports, analyses and summaries by simulation center staff. Prepare summary and other complex reports as necessary and present reports to system/college leadership.
  • Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with internal and external personnel, partners, stakeholders and constituents, including outside agencies and vendors.
  • Contribute to the development and management of center budgets and accounts including gathering, analyzing and synthesizing appropriate data and reports; identifying and resolving errors and discrepancies.
  • Responsible for preparing complex return on investment (ROI) reports, statements, rosters and similar analyses; responsible for comprehensive data and/or information gathering, complex calculations. Develop special reports/analyses for review by faculty and leadership.
  • Coordinate committee and workgroup meetings as needed. Collaborate with designated college representatives in finance, performance improvement, data analytics, and others to support ROI analysis.
  • Coordinate relationships with Federal and State health organizations and agencies.
  • Supervise Simulation Center Technician.

  • Participate in appropriate national organizations to keep abreast of new concepts to provide optimal and continually updated technologies and service to meet the needs of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, other University units and/or external users.

  • Regular travel locally and within the central Illinois area may be required.

Education Qualifications, required:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Preferred degree fields include engineering, health care or related fields.

Education Qualifications, preferred:

  • Master’s degree.
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialists (CHSOS) certification.

Experience Qualifications, required:

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in engineering, health care, educational technology, or a closely related field, including at least 2 years of experience in health care/medical simulation.
  • Evidence of excellent organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal and communications skills that incorporate tact and diplomacy, with the ability to effectively cultivate relationships.
  • Strong ability to work independently and collaboratively and demonstrate initiative.
  • Ability to maintain the highest standards regarding confidentiality of all student, standardized patient and curriculum related information.

Experience Qualifications, preferred:

  • Experience in an engineering or medical school environment, or, in a health care setting.
  • Administrative experience, including supervisory experience.
  • Experience developing service based cost center pricing models.
  • Experience working with federal and state organizations and agencies to secure funding.

Knowledge, preferred:

  • Knowledge of student and patient privacy regulations (FERPA, HIPAA, etc.).
  • The position requires a strong work ethic, an approachable leadership style, and a consistent focus on the college’s immediate and strategic goals.

Training:

  • Must be willing to learn all aspects of the college’s operational and strategic objectives.

This is a full-time (100%), 12-month, benefits eligible, Academic Professional position that reports administratively to the Center’s two Co-Directors, and reports functionally to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the Carle Illinois College of Medicine for simulation education content. Salary is commensurate with experience. Start date for this position will be as soon as possible after the close of the search.
