ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, ACADEMIC AND STUDENT SERVICES

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Responsible for creation and implementation of plans and events to support all phases of the accountancy student experience from recruitment through graduation with a focus on the Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA) program. Work with directors and team to deliver a quality educational experience for students which meets the needs of the accountancy programs and its students.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Advising & Academic Services

  • Serve as lead student services resource for the MSA program
  • Serve as primary contact for Graduate College (petitions, late add/drop, degree certification, etc.)
  • Advise students about the program and graduation requirements of the Department and the Graduate College
  • Monitor students’ progress toward the degree and facilitate communication with probation/at-risk students to strategically plan for future success
  • Facilitate annual academic reviews with MSA students
  • Assist students with resolution of academic problems
  • Build a solid knowledge of the accounting curriculum
  • Develop the ability to read international and domestic transcripts in order to understand students’ academic background and enhance student advising
  • Create customized course plans for students with guidance from the Academic Director
  • Serve as a liaison to units administering the English Placement Test (EPT) and English as Second Language (ESL) courses, including coordination of special EPT sessions for MSA students, and coordination with ESL directors to ensure sufficient ESL seats for MSA students
  • Serve as a liaison with ISSS for OPT applications
  • Inform and refer students to other institutional resources and services when necessary
  • Build a deep knowledgeable of university processes and policies regarding curriculum and program change
  • Develop a working knowledge of the accounting profession in order to best advise students
  • Explain and illustrate use of the U of I Integrate registration
  • Assist with compiling of student data when necessary using databases
  • Utilize the University’s Banner and Slate systems to enhance student advising
  • Create and maintain the MSA Student Handbook
  • Assist in the management of all social media accounts
  • Develop and implement the MSA exit survey

Student Events and Experience Planning

  • Along with MSA Associate Director, plan and facilitate all accountancy student-focused events in the Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA) program including but not limited to orientation, graduation, social events, etc.
  • Along with MSA Associate Director, plan and coordinate experiential learning and professional development activities for MSA students, including the Chicago trip and activities/events in conjunction with other Gies graduate programs
  • Some night and weekend obligations as well as domestic and international travel for student-service oriented relationship building, etc.

Recruiting

  • Work closely with the recruiting and admissions team to help develop recruiting strategies, initiatives, schedules, events, and materials to recruit students to the MSA program
  • Some night and weekend obligations as well as domestic and international travel for recruiting events, relationship building, etc.

Misc.

  • Hire and oversee student workers where appropriate
  • Other duties as deemed appropriate by Accountancy leadership

POSITION REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

This search is internal to campus. Consideration of applications is limited to candidates who possess a current affiliation with the Illinois campus.

Education

Bachelor’s degree required; MBA, Master of Accounting, or other relevant master’s degree preferred.

Experience/Knowledge
Required: Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a higher education environment. Excellent organizational and communication skills, ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities, and proven success in managing across multiple stakeholders. Must demonstrate a service oriented attitude and enthusiasm for working with faculty and students. Working knowledge of computer related databases and office-related software.

Preferred: Experience working with a diverse student population. Two years of experience in an advising environment, including advising diverse students; administering and assessing programs; understanding student development issues as they relate to advising and the student experience. Demonstrated knowledge of Gies graduate programs and college organizational structure

APPOINTMENT STATUS:
This is a full-time (100%), benefits-eligible academic professional position appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Research

Undergraduate Education

The University has a fundamental commitment to undergraduate education. Nearly 28,000 undergraduate students are enrolled in nine undergraduate divisions, which together offer some 4,000 courses in more than 150 fields of study.

Undergraduate admission is highly selective. In the 2001 freshman class, students in the middle 50% had ACT scores between 25 and 30 and ranked between the 83rd and 96th percentiles of their high school graduating classes.
