Gettysburg College is currently seeking a part-time Art Studio Technician to work in the Department of Art and Art History. The Studio Technician will work 25 – 27 hours per week, year round. Some evening and weekend hours may be required. The positon reports to the Chair of Art and Art History and manages the daily operations of the Studio Art facilities, equipment and studios as well as the West Gallery. The Studio Technician is the primary departmental contact with Facilities Services for all maintenance issues and requests. This position also maintains studio equipment and provides technical assistance to the faculty and students in the Department of Art and Art History. Additionally, this position assists faculty members with training and supervising students on the proper and safe use of the equipment, and is responsible for teaching and maintaining best practices regarding cleaning and safety.
Regular duties of the Studio Technician include but are not limited to:

•Responsible for the daily operation of the art studios during both academic semesters;
•Maintains daily email contact with faculty members regarding projects;
•Submits and monitors all maintenance requests with Facilities Services;
•Keeps accurate log of work hours including facilities name and/or faculty member name associated with each project;
•Supervises and instructs students in the safe operation and use of all power and hand tools;
•Assists faculty with demonstrations pertaining to course projects;
•Serves as the Department’s Safety Officer; and is department contact with OHSA representative;
•Educates and supervises student users and student workers regarding material and equipment safety and appropriate housekeeping practices; maintains safety equipment in good working order;
•Ensures the security and maintenance of the department tool storage facilities;
•Maintains machinery and equipment in good working order, provides general upkeep in studios;
•Maintains inventory and alerts faculty members regarding stock shortages and equipment needs:
•Assists faculty in planning and design of studio setup for specific courses;
•Assists faculty with their studio work as needed;
•Fires kilns and keeps records
•Mixes glazes and keeps records
•Coordinates clay recycling
•Maintains inventories for ceramic glaze mixing materials, tools, and equipment
•Coordinates ceramic studio hygiene/cleaning as per OSHA standards
•Assists in the construction of painting canvases
•Regular use of stationary and portable power tools;
•Ordering and obtaining materials for studio courses

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art or a related area is highly preferred. Documented experience in the use of equipment associated with art studios is also required along with excellent attention to detail and the ability to be persistent to see projects through. The successful candidate should have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and have skills in the following areas: kiln firing, glaze mixing, wood shop, canvas construction and welding.

Rate of pay: $18.50 – $19.50 per hour, negotiable depending on experience

Status: Part-Time Support Staff (This position is eligible for prorated sick leave, vacation and holiday pay and pension after 2 years).

    Gettysburg College Gettysburg College has been witness and participant to some of the most significant events in the history of our nation. Chartered in 1832 to provide education for the residents of south-central Pennsylvania, the College was a neighbor to fighting between Union and Confederate troops in July 1863. On July 1, math professor Michael Jacobs cancelled classes after telling his students that their minds were no longer on their lessons.
