DESCRIPTION

The Center for Academic Research and Training in Anthropogeny (CARTA) is largely a virtual organization established to promote transdisciplinary research into human origins (aka anthropogeny), drawing on methods from a number of traditional disciplines spanning the social, biomedical, biological, computational and engineering, physical and chemical sciences, and the humanities. CARTA began as a collaboration between faculty at UC San Diego and at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, along with interested scientists at other institutions. In January 2008, CARTA became a UC San Diego recognized Organized Research Unit (ORU).

Initially, CARTA focused on it’s academic and intellectual mission, and only reached out to the greater San Diego community through it’s public symposia on topics related to anthropogeny. However, the CARTA leadership soon recognized the importance of educating the broader academic community, including students, and the public at large, about current knowledge regarding human origins, given the implications of this knowledge for many practical issues affecting the current human condition. Furthermore, by raising greater awareness of this valuable educational resource, the CARTA leadership hoped to uncover new sources of philanthropic support.

CARTA continues to host public symposia on topics related to anthropogeny; however, they are now also live-streamed and freely accessible to a global audience. UCSD-TV continues to video record these symposia and all of the recordings are permanently archived on multiple websites including CARTA, UCSD-TV, iTunes, and YouTube. Viewership of these recordings is escalating as more videos come online and awareness of CARTA increases.

Reporting to CARTA’s Executive Director, the Community Relations/Development Director is responsible for the overall brand management, developing a creative vision, direction and administration of CARTA marketing initiatives. These marketing activities include, but are not limited to: print, web, TV, social media, and advertising.

The person holding this position also assists in fundraising for the CARTA research and educational missions. Given the special training and knowledge required for fundraising, the Community Relations/Development Director spends several days a week in the Health Sciences Advancement Office, and has a “dotted line” reporting relationship to the head of Health Sciences Advancement.

This also means that the Community Relations/Development Director’s fundraising performance is evaluated by the head of Health Sciences Advancement at the end of each fiscal year. The incumbent's role in Advancement is to cultivate relationships with individuals, non-profit foundations, and corporations, with the goal of identifying potential sources of funding for CARTA, and to prepare written and oral gift solicitations for these same constituents.

Responsibilities also include exploring new and creative partnership opportunities in and outside of the community and thus leveraging expenditures associated with these marketing efforts. The Director must work with a high degree of independence and represent CARTA in the community at key presentations, events and activities. The ideal candidate is an entrepreneurial and energetic professional with a proven track record in higher education marketing and communications.
