DESCRIPTION

The Student Health and Well-being (SHW) cluster of the UC San Diego Health System plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture at UC San Diego that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the expansion/development of a student health and well-being center, and the transformation of existing departments, under the oversight of the executive director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS) and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).

SHS provides primary medical care, including urgent care and support services such as laboratory, pharmacy, and x-ray to over 35,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. SHS staff consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, pharmacists, x-ray technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical lab assistants, optometrists, medical assistants, health educators, administrative and other healthcare professionals.

Under general supervision of the Lab Supervisor, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) performs clinical laboratory testing, ensures proper collection of patient specimens including performing phlebotomy, and assists in promoting a quality of service based on accuracy and timeliness in reporting results. The CLS is also responsible for assisting the Lab Supervisor in the effective operation of the laboratory through the coordination of all activities in their respective responsibilities.

The CLS will perform basic, routine and advanced clinical laboratory procedures, as required. In each area, the CLS must maintain in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles and instrumentation, as well as the physiological conditions affecting test results. The incumbent must demonstrate competent computer skills and maintain familiarity with the various testing procedures done in a laboratory as required to successfully perform the job duties. In addition, the incumbent will conduct or assist in special projects and evaluate new products and instrumentation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current State of California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license (this license includes phlebotomy tasks) or similar license.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working as a licensed Clinical Lab Scientist.

  • A current CPR certification.

  • Proven skill in using a clinical microscope and performing bacteriology and sensitivity testing, cell counts and other tests performed in a laboratory.

  • Demonstrated ability to select and prepare specimen.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of proper safety and sterile procedures in a laboratory setting.

  • Excellent interpersonal and listening skills specific to patient care work, are required including ability to: develop working relationships; positively represent SHS across diverse communities. Interact effectively with tact and diplomacy regarding laboratory testing concerns.

  • Proficiency using computer/information technology for the following purposes: LIS, EMR, word processing (Word); internet and intranet; and other purposes (data entry/typing, electronic filing, database, spreadsheet (Excel) and presentation (PowerPoint) applications, email, etc.)

  • Knowledge, and technical ability to use, maintain, and troubleshoot the interaction between the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), the Laboratory Information System (LIS), and the reference lab computer system and interface for the ordering and resulting of laboratory tests.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Must complete initial credential verification, & re-credentialing every 3rd year thereafter.
  • Day, evening and weekend hours are required as scheduled.
  • TB screening and flu vaccination are required annually.
  • Must complete initial mandatory health requirements, and current clear TB test results and flu vaccination. In the absence of immunization records, immunity titer blood testing will be required to determine if other immunizations are needed.
