DESCRIPTION

The EMR (Epic) Principal Trainer - Information Services plays an important role in educating and preparing new and existing staff at UC San Diego Health that make use of the Epic EMR and other IT applications. As part of the IS Training team, incumbent will support end user learning, especially in the ambulatory space, via a variety of channels.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Provide classroom instruction for clinical and non-clinical staff on Epic applications and other IT services during new employee orientation as well as ongoing refresher classes. Acquire knowledge of Epic functionality and workflows of audience group. Perform site visits in hospital and clinic areas, shadowing end user workflows for learning and observation. Provide 1:1 instruction and at-the-elbow support when necessary. Work closely with application training and build analysts to ensure proper understanding and communication related to class curriculum, system changes and best practices.

Provides feedback from classroom and on-site visits to help optimize system and users’ understanding of the same. Conduct self as a positive spokesperson and “face” of the IS team at all times and take responsibility for end user learning and satisfaction with IS services. Create and maintain classroom rosters using the Learning Management System and assist users with LMS activities as necessary. Follow standard training procedures and curriculum to ensure high quality and consistent learning experience for end users. Assist with creation of learning materials for end users including tip-sheets, handouts, e-learning, quick-start guides etc. as necessary. Perform other training and communication related duties as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in healthcare information technology, computer science, or related area; and/or equivalent combination of experience/training.

  • A minimum of three (3+) or more years of relevant experience.

  • Proven ability to provide expert consultative guidance and direction on change initiatives affecting clinical care processes.

  • Solid ability in workflow and data analysis and design techniques, including needs assessment, specification development, quantitative methods, planning and gap analysis.

  • Ability to effectively utilize system tools to meet functionality needs of users.

  • Experience and proven success in information systems implementation, development and support within a large-scale healthcare organization.

  • Ability to plan and organize day-to-day activities along with short and long-term projects; in-depth knowledge of organizational and project planning processes and ability to produce and maintain high quality planning documents.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Dedicated team player with strong interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with Epic's Inpatient Clinical Documentation.
  • EPIC Certification.
  • Nursing or clinical background highly desirable.
  • Experience as a major participant in a clinical system implementation.
  • Experience training providers and clinical staff on Epic's Inpatient Clinical Documentation application.
  • Additional experience with other clinical applications such as Orders and Grand Central is helpful.
