Merced College is a midsized community college located in California's Central Valley. The Veterans Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) Technician provides excellent customer service to eligible veterans, civilians, active and reserve military students, and family members applying for and receiving Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) GI Bill educational benefits and Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) benefits. This position will work collaboratively with on campus programs and veteran related community organizations to ensure the growth of the Merced College Veteran and family member population. This position requires a dynamic individual with creative ideas dedicated to student success. General Description:
Under general direction of the Program Director, performs complex clerical and computer-related duties involved in the coordination and maintenance of all records and reports pertinent to the credit and noncredit Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) and other student services programs as needed; coordinates assistance to students and staff; develops statistical data; coordinates office activities; provides administrative support; oversees clerical functions and assists with outreach activities and events.


Examples of Duties
Essential Functions:
  • Provides support in ensuring coordination, training and compliance for all of the components of the Student Success and Support Program, specifically those outlined in the District's SSSP Plan
  • Assist in organizing and providing support for outreach events and activities
  • Assist in communicating with high school and community partners
  • Compiles, reviews, and corrects data related to the credit and non-credit SSSP Program
  • Compiles MIS data as required for SSSP data processing and compliance
  • Collects, compiles and corrects information pertaining to matriculation activities and prepares drafts of reports
  • Assists in preparing information for budget development
  • Assist in creating outreach and instructional materials, flyers, brochures posters and other promotional material
  • Understand and communicate state and college regulations, policies and procedures
  • Answers and initiates correspondence independently
  • Prepares agenda and other information for meetings and conferences
  • Takes minutes and notes of meetings
  • Create SSSP outreach and instructional materials, flyers, brochures, posters and other promotional material
  • Understand and communicate state and college regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal, state and local laws relative to SSSP
  • Assists students by providing information regarding SSSP services available at Merced College
  • Assists in maintaining contact and communication with individuals, groups, associations and professional agencies
  • Receives calls and gives out information where judgment, knowledge and interpretation of policies, procedures and regulations are necessary
  • Orders and issues supplies
  • Operates computers, a variety of software, and other office equipment
  • May train, assign and oversee student assistants
Knowledge of:
  • Pertinent federal, state and local laws relative to SSSP
  • District and department guidelines and policies
  • Excellent oral and written communication, technical report writing and editing skills
  • Collection and organization of data and information
  • Modern office equipment, practices, and procedures including Microsoft Office 2010 applications
  • Correct usage of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary
  • Strong Math skills
Ability to:
  • Work independently with a minimum of supervision
  • Prepare and edit reports and other materials
  • Train and oversee student workers
  • Takes minutes/notes of meetings
  • Type 55 net wpm
  • Utilize standard and specialized software formats
  • Effectively communicate with K-12 administrators and college faculty, staff, students and the public
  • Work cooperatively with others


Typical Qualifications
Required:
  • Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
  • Three years of experience in advanced level clerical and technical work, customer service, record keeping, spreadsheet and database management.
  • Type 55 net words per minute.
  • Top candidates will be required to complete assessment exams. These exams will establish MS Word and Excel proficiency and basic office skills.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Preferred:
  • Understanding of the Student Success and Support Program.
  • Experience with program implementation.
  • Current with Federal Rules and Regulations.

Interview Information: Those applicants deemed most qualified for the position will be invited to appear for oral interviews before a screening committee.
