Basic Function/Summary of Position:
The Data Analyst is charged with data analysis and reporting for Institutional Research and the Soll Center for Student Opportunity. Core elements of the role include collecting and validating data from multiple databases and sources, interpreting data and analyzing results using statistical techniques, authoring reports and developing data visualizations and dashboards, and writing procedures that will allow for easier access and ongoing analysis of data within multiple systems.
The Registrar and Institutional Research offices are in a combined office at CMC. The IR office mission is to conduct research to support the continuing academic advancement of CMC, institutional decision-making, and strategic planning. The Soll Center for Student Opportunity is home to career services, the scholar communities, and sponsored internships and experiences and assists students in exploring, cultivating, and translating their skills, interests, and talents into real-world opportunities. This position will support the institutional research needs of both offices.
1. Collect and analyze data from multiple databases, including CX (student data), Handshake (career development), Raiser’s Edge (alumni/development), Slate (admissions), and Workday, along with relevant reporting tools (Cognos, etc.)
2. Prepare reports, data visualizations, and dashboards using tools, such as Tableau, infographics and macro-enabled workbooks.
3. Scrape, collect, filter, and validate data from non-CMC databases and data sources, such as LinkedIn, the National Student Clearinghouse StudentTracker, and other aggregated sources of graduate outcome metrics.
4. Conduct statistical analysis using Excel, SPSS, or R.
5. Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets, such as sponsored internship and experience data and graduate outcome data.
6. Work with management to help prioritize business and information needs.
7. Locate and define new process improvement opportunities. Draft policies and procedures to execute improvements.
8. Respond to internal and external inquiries regarding data pertaining to student outcomes.
9. Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The position requires:
- Proven work experience as a research, data, or business data analyst.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information and reports with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Skilled at attention to details, problem-solving, and solutions focused
- Experience with databases, reporting tools, and data visualization tools within a networked systems environment.
- Knowledge of statistics and experience using statistical software for analyzing datasets (Excel, SPSS, R, SAS, etc.).
- Experience using Handshake analytics and reporting tools is preferred.
- Experience working with financial data, preferably in financial aid.
- Excellent oral and written skills are a must.
- Experience in meeting the needs of a diverse and highly motivated population.
- Experience in using statistics to effectively inform business decisions.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to simultaneously work with multiple constituencies including students, alumni, faculty, administrators, parents, and employers while maintaining the highest levels of confidentiality.
EDUCATION: A bachelor’s degree, preferably in the social or natural sciences with advanced preparation in statistics or other quantitative field, is required.
EXPERIENCE: 2 years of proven work experience or a combination of work experience and an advanced degree with increasing responsibility in data analytics is required.
LICENSES: A valid driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required.
The Colleges regular office hours for are 8:00 am-5:00 pm Monday through Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required. The hours for this position, however, may vary due to needs of the College. Some domestic travel is required.
CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:
This is a full-time, 12-month exempt level, benefits-eligible position.
This position reports to the Director of Institutional Research with a dotted line to the Director of Student Opportunities.
