BASIC FUNCTION:

 

This position is established to enhance Claremont McKenna College’s ability to strategically plan for a campus environment that supports healthy living and the overall well-being of the student population. The assistant director is tasked with developing and implementing programs supporting the important role of health and wellness initiatives in a highly selective, residential liberal arts environment, and a comprehensive educational outreach program that supports the educational mission of Claremont McKenna College and effectively serves a diverse population of approximately 1,300 students. The assistant director is responsible for developing, implementing, evaluating, and continually improving health promotion programs, outreach, presentations, and workshops focusing on health and well-being.

 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Students, the Assistant Director for Student Health and Well-Being works both collaboratively and independently to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Contribute as a vital member of a collaborative, student-centered, collaborative DOS professional team.
  • Provide program development and implementation consistent with the College’s health and wellness framework; this includes the development, implementation, and assessment of short and long-term programs that support students’ health, well-being, and the development of important connected life skills.
  • Ensure that all programming decisions demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and gender equity
  • Work with the Academic Success professional team to develop a wellness coaching framework for the DOS Success Consultants, a peer-leader position.
  • Direct the programmatic implementation of an evidence-based health and wellness plan in close alignment with the strategic priorities of the College and of the DOS Office.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with Student Activities, Residence Life, CARE Center, and Mental Health Case Manager, to design and deliver effective outreach programs and events.
  • Work with students, faculty, and staff to create a campus culture of health and well-being at CMC that is evidence-based and leads to the development and prioritization of program goals.
  • Create health education and well-being materials for a range of modalities including email, internet, social media platforms, posters, handbooks, bulletin boards, etc.
  • Promote the services of health and well-being to the broader CMC community, including faculty and staff; identify barriers to communicating the need for seeking help; create avenues for increased awareness and utilization; and advise campus leaders on population health-related issues.
  • Provide health-related presentations to campus audiences to include students, athletic teams, faculty and staff, campus organizations, and families; these may include, but are not limited to presentations related to body image, nutrition, disordered eating, drug and alcohol use, empowerment skills, fitness, healthy relationships, healthy sleep patterns, nutrition, sexual orientation, sexual relationships, stress management, and unplugging from technology and social media; all programs are designed with an inclusive framework and knowledge of the way diverse individuals experience the concepts of health, well-being and self-care.
  • Work closely with DOS staff including residential life, student activities, the CARE Center, and case management to ensure programs meet the needs of CMC students; this includes supporting the work of health and wellness related student clubs, and participating in the training of resident assistants, first-year guides, and other student leaders as needed to ensure they are prepared to support students’ health and well-being.
  • Work closely and coordinate as needed with the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) department of athletics, recreation, and physical education including student-athletes, the CMS Coordinator of Health and Wellness, coaches, and athletic trainers, to develop collaborative programs.
  • Collaborate with The Claremont Colleges consortium services and departments including, but not limited to: Health Education Outreach, Student Health Services, Monsour Counseling Services, Macalister Center for Religious Activities, Office of Black Student Affairs (OBSA), Chicanx and Latinx Student Affairs (CLSA), the Queer Resource Center (QRC), Empowerment Center, and other resource groups; represent the specific interests of Claremont McKenna College students and supplement consortium programs with CMC-specific programs.
  • Be a visible leader on campus, within the Consortium, and in the Claremont community; represent the College to external constituents, including prospective students, parents, and the general public in a manner that demonstrates personal and professional integrity and promotes the interests of Claremont McKenna College.
  • Coordinate assessment activities as required by the College’s institutional policy and regional accreditors; plan assessment of health and well-being data, identify departmental needs and priorities, and evaluate effectiveness of interventions and measure learning outcomes; prepare operational reports and analyses that identify student trends and recommend appropriate programs and solutions.
  • Manage a health education outreach and wellness budget; compile, record, and submit annual program evaluation reports.
  • Seek external funding opportunities to support enhancements to the College’s health and wellness program.
  • Comply with all federal, state, local, and institutional regulations regarding privacy and confidentiality protection for students.
  • Screen and recommend external vendors or service providers as needed for the provision of student programming.
  • Perform other essential duties and tasks specific to the position.
  • May serve in the on-call dean rotation.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

 

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s degree or equivalent experience in student affairs, public health, or related field is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:  A minimum of 2 years of experience contributing to a successful, multifaceted outreach program, preferably in health and wellness in higher education.

LICENSES: A valid driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:  Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

  • Commitment to the development of life skills supporting the health and well-being of individuals and communities through education and practice
  • Working knowledge of public health models and effective marketing strategies for health and wellness programs
  • Deep understanding of inclusivity and the ways diverse populations interact and intersect with concepts of health and well-being
  • Appreciation for the distinct mission of Claremont McKenna College and the experiences afforded in a residential, liberal arts environment
  • A high level of organization with proven managerial and leadership skills, including the ability to recruit and develop outstanding student leaders
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with a demonstrated record of being a leader and spokesperson
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, team building skills, and creativity required to manage resources effectively to achieve results

OTHER:

 

HOURS:   The regular hours for this position are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Hours may vary and will include evening and weekend work based on the needs of the College or department.

CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:  This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt level, benefits-eligible position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:    Light (up to 20 lbs.)                                                                                                         

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:  This position supervises student workers.

HOUSING:  This position is required to live on campus.
