Job Description Summary

Working under general supervision, responsible for moving furniture and equipment both on and off campus to support job related moves, surplus activities, and event setup. Will also assist with general campus waste and recycling collection.

Job Description

  • Assists with job related moves and event set-ups, both on and off campus.
  • Assists with general Surplus duties including collection, transportation and management of Surplus Goods as needed.
  • Assists with maintenance of material control forms for tracking and controlling surplus materials
  • Operates material handling equipment, to include pallet jacks, cardboard balers, and forklifts.
  • Regularly assists with general campus waste/recycling and litter collection.
  • Assists university departments and organizations with recycling projects and makes necessary arrangements for collections and/or deliveries.
  • Cleans and maintains workspaces and warehouse facility including sweeping, mopping, dusting, trash removal, bathroom upkeep, and other general maintenance as assigned.
  • May drive and handle university trash collection vehicles. May also drive and operate box truck, standard size truck as needed.
  • Provides a consistently high level of customer service, and possesses strong interpersonal skills to maintain effective working relationships with university customers at all levels.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Functions

  • Is considered an essential employee as designated in the Facilities Management Severe Weather Policy.
  • Is subject to recall after hours in the event of campus emergencies, disasters or other special needs as directed by management.
  • Reports all matters of safety to the appropriate Supervisor and to the Safety Director if necessary.
  • Follows all University and departmental policies and procedures

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Ability:

  • High school diploma with one year related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
  • English communication: able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills. Must be flexible and adaptable to work as part of an integrated team to achieve goals and objectives. 
  • Must be able to meet requirements of the University's automobile insurance.
  • Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move furniture and other items.
  • Constant lifting, carrying and bending. Stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, hearing, repetitive motions. 
  • Visual acuity, necessary to safely operate motor vehicles, heavy equipment and tools.
  • Subject to outside environmental conditions: extreme heat, cold and atmospheric conditions.  
  • Basic understanding and knowledge of techniques, tools and equipment, as well as all required safety precautions.

Accountabilities:

May occasionally be responsible for the supervision of temporary help.
