Regular Days Off: Saturday and Sunday
Supervision Received: The Director of Residential Engagement will receive direct supervision from the Vice President for Student Affairs or Dean of Students.
Supervision Exercised: The Director of Residential Engagement supervises the Associate Director, Accountant and Residence Engagement staff as determined.
Salary: $77,000-$83,000 Commensurate with experience and education

General Statement of Duties: The Director of Residential Engagement is responsible for the overall operation of the Residential Engagement program, including professional and paraprofessional staff hiring, selection, training and development, as well as leading the student engagement focus of Residential Living. The primary focus of the director will be providing an enhanced delivery of programs and services to resident students with the specific purpose of increasing student retention, persistence and graduation rates. The director will be an out-of-the-box thinker who can provide vision and leadership to guarantee a positive student life experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include but not limited to:
Essential:

  1. Hire, select, train and intermediately supervise professional and paraprofessional staff with primary emphasis on student engagement and community building in all aspects of the hiring, training and supervision process.
  2. Provide ongoing mentoring, training and supervision to staff relative to administration and management skills.
  3. Seek out and connect with all students in residence halls to gain input and shared governance in decision making; lead the Residential Engagement staff in building community within the residence halls.
  4. Establish and implement a programming model for residential students that integrates in-class teaching with co-curricular activities and learning.
  5. Manage the Residential Engagement budget and act as a department head in approving financial documents and preparing annual budget requests.
  6. Set annual departmental goals that contribute to the University mission and strategic plan, and lead staff in development of a strategic plan for the office of residential engagement.
  7. Develop a comprehensive department assessment and evaluation plan for all programs and services of the department.
  8. Lead professional staff through example and professional development in the practice of Inclusion Every Day, a University effort to actively promote and support diversity and inclusion.
  9. Collaborate with Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management and other divisions in providing high impact practices that benefit enrollment, housing occupancy, and build a exemplary residential campus community.
  10. Attend to student needs and issues in a proactive manner, and guide all paraprofessional and professional staff in doing the same.
  11. Serve as Administrator-on-Call and Emergency Response Team member, managing student and campus crisis situations in cooperation with other departments.
  12. Respond to issues from various stakeholders, including students, parents, city/state agencies and others in a prompt and effective manner.
  13. Serve as the primary liaison between Residential Living and Housing Operations, working closely with the department head in Housing Operations to insure smooth experience of all Residential Life services for students.
  14. Act to engage residential students in the Westfield State Experience.
  15. Annually update and review all policies and procedures relative to residential life.
  16. Adhere to ethical and professional guidelines as established by the State, University and applicable professional organizations.

Non-Essential:

  1. Manage special projects as outlined by the Vice President/Dean of Student Affairs.
  2. Be present, available and approachable to students above and beyond normal business hours.




Requirements:

  • Master's degree required in Higher Education Administration or related field.
  • Seven (7) years of progressive experience within Residential Life and/or Student Affairs.
  • Proven leadership in selecting and building strong professional staff with primary emphasis on student advocacy.
  • Proven success in quality co-curricular programming, working in collaboration with Academic Affairs.
  • Proven ability to manage serious crisis and emergency situations.
  • Proven ability to build positive communities within a residential living environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Salary:
Specific salary for current Westfield State University employees and individuals currently working for the state of Massachusetts must be calculated individually in accordance with collective bargaining and state policies and procedures.
