The Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (FASE) at the University of Toronto is considering developing an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Centre of Excellence to help accelerate the adoption of appropriate anaerobic digestion technology by Canadian industry, public utilities, and government. FASE is already home to expertise, facilities, and equipment actively being used to study anaerobic digestion from lab to full scale. Moreover, there is considerable expertise in AD distributed throughout Ontario. We are looking for a Research Officer, for a one-year term, to investigate the need for an Anaerobic Digestion Centre of Excellence and determine its feasibility. The Research Officer will define the scope and relevance of the Centre, drafting a plan for its implementation, developing academic and industry partnerships, and evaluating its financial sustainability.

Your opportunity:

The Research Officer will work with collaborating university faculty members and staff in developing relationships with representatives from industry, industry associations, public utilities, and government. The primary activities will be interviewing industry representatives to determine anaerobic digestion interests and needs, building case studies, identifying similar initiatives in Canada and the United States, and determining the economic feasibility of implementing anaerobic digestion facilities.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assessing needs and contributing to the planning of research goals
  • Assessing and selecting methods of data collection and analysis for research projects
  • Developing project schedules including milestones, critical path, timelines, deliverables and reporting
  • Scheduling day-to-day project activities
  • Implementing and executing qualitative and/or quantitative research methods
  • Preparing draft statistical reports and summaries from data collected
  • Supervising the activities of research assistants
 



CampusEssential Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Chemical or Environmental Engineering with strong background in liquid and solid-state anaerobic digestion or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years related experience completing techno-economics assessments and financial projections and/or R&D.
  • Experience in business development and fostering collaborations between complementary organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience completing techno-economic assessments and financial projections.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of entrepreneurial process.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills including the ability to write and communicate effectively with a wide range of people (administrators, government, industry and researchers).
  • Demonstrated ability to father, formulate and present complex information.
  • Project management skills.
  • Ability to deal efficiently with deadlines and time constraints.
  • Highly proactive, persuasive and diplomatic.
  • Ability to understand and articulate research goals and requirements of industry and academic contracts.
  • Understand research contracts and intellectual property.
