The Health & Counselling Centre (HCC) at UTM is a multi-disciplinary health clinic that provides student-friendly medical care, mental health counselling, and health education and promotion programs and services to a diverse student population of undergraduate and graduate students . The HCC strives to empower students to make healthier, evidence-based choices to support their growth and development, assists students in their pursuit of academic success, and promotes adoption of positive coping skills to foster greater resiliency in the pursuit of current and future goals. The HCC works closely with other departments across the University with the goal of ensuring students have timely access to quality medical and mental health supports.

Your opportunity:

Under the general direction of the Lead Nurse, Health & Counselling Centre, the Registered Nurse provides nursing care and support for students through direct nursing intervention. The Registered Nurse is responsible for triaging patients presenting with a variety of medical and mental health needs; offering direct care to ill or distressed patients; coordinating referrals and tests ordered by physicians; providing venipuncture, injections, and general first aid; dispensing medications; reviewing test results; assisting physicians during examinations and procedures; and providing health education to patients.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Assessing the physical and mental condition of patients to determine medical needs
  • Determining if there is a life-threatening illness, risk of self-harm or harm to others and independently applying appropriate interventions
  • Providing detailed information to physicians regarding patient needs and background history as required
  • Providing ongoing health counselling to patients
  • Updating and maintaining patient records
  • Scheduling appointments
  • Exercising extreme care to prevent serious physical or emotional injury or harm
  • Serving as a resource to others by providing (non-supervisory) job-related guidance


CampusEssential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or acceptable combination of equivalent experience. Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Minimum five years of recent clinical experience.
  • Experience in a primary care setting with post-secondary students or emergency room is required.
  • Must have current BCLS and CPR certification.
  • Must demonstrate excellent clinical knowledge and skills including physical assessment, strong teaching and counselling abilities.
  • Venipuncture experience is essential.
  • Experience with electronic medical records is required.
  • Knowledge in the practice of evidence based nursing in a primary care setting combined with a genuine interest in young adults.
  • Excellent communication (verbal & written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong nursing assessment skills with an ability to develop nursing diagnosis.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Strong knowledge of the standards of nursing practice and their application to a community practice setting.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and tight time lines.
  • Sensitivity to the diversity of the student body, with training in cultural sensitivity
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team are essential.
  • Prior experience using electronic medical records (EMR) required

Assets (Nonessential):
  • Prior experience with OSCAR (EMR) preferred
  • Prior experience presenting workshops related to sexual health, contraception, etc.
