Duties

The Library Support Specialist is responsible for supporting the library in various capacities. This position reports directly to the University Library Director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
CIRCULATION:
•Responsible for staffing the circulation desk and closing of the library building. Works an alternative schedule of Sunday-Thursday 12pm-9pm. (Subject to change based on the needs of the Library)
•Assists Circulation Supervisor with reports, notifications, and records maintenance as needed.
•Maintenance of the library stacks including but not limited to reading, shifting, shelving and fronting the materials.
•Patron Assistance including but not limited to general use questions, reference desk hours, and patron complaints with appropriate logging of the questions and answers.
•Assists in the supervision of the student assistants.
•Provides courteous customer service to all patrons and students.
•Works in conjunction with the Circulation Supervisor to ensure smooth operations of the Circulation department.
INTERLIBRARY LOAN SERVICES:
•Responsible for the efficient running of Interlibrary Loan services including but not limited to ordering, receiving, processing, shipping, copying, and follow-up of lending and receiving materials.
•Maintains a manual for Interlibrary Loan policies and procedures with instructions for the backup if needed.
•Maintains records and statistics for the Interlibrary Loan department.
•Keeps abreast of new technologies and practices in interlibrary loan.
•Assist patrons, staff, and faculty with issues dealing with Interlibrary Loan and material retrieval.
FACULTY RESERVE MATERIALS:
•Assists in maintaining a manual for Reserve policies and procedures with instructions for the backup if needed.
•Assists in maintaining the reserve shelves for faculty and students, including placement and removal of reserve materials in accordance to copyright laws.
•Assists in communicating with faculty and students regarding the reserve collection.
•Assists in maintaining records identifying placement and removal of reserve materials.
•Assists in providing Library Staff with information regarding the reserve collection.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
•Serves as back-up to Course Reserves as needed.
•Remain abreast of current developments in field.

Qualifications

•Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s Degree preferred) from an accredited college or university in related field.
•Experience in Microsoft Office required.
•At least two years of experience working in a library or related organization required; academic library experience preferred.
OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS:
•Effective oral and written skills.
•Ability to work independently or with minimum supervision.
•Ability to work flexible schedule including evenings and weekend hours.
•Initiative to address and resolve library problems or issues.
•Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff, and general public.
•Basic knowledge of archival procedures in preservation and conservation.
•Ability to work well under pressure, and be flexible in the face of change.
•Working knowledge of a personal computer, specifically email, Internet, and online purchasing.
•Computer and printer troubleshooting skills, and ability to learn new computer software.
•Knowledge of library practices, procedures, standards, and organization.

Located in historic Athens, Alabama, Athens State University offers junior and senior-level coursework to community college graduates and transfer students holding sufficient credits from other institutions.
