Departmental Overview
The Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS), established in 1919, is an organized research unit which supports interdisciplinary research and public service, focused on American politics and public policy, and coordinates research activities for several separate research centers, four faculty colloquia, a professional Library, a publishing program, a major student internship program, and several affiliated programs. Its Director reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research. The Institute annually administers research grants and contracts from a wide variety of federal, state and private funding sources, with an annual operating budget of about $6 million. The Institute and its research centers employ approximately 50 persons, made up of affiliated faculty and researchers, graduate students and administrative staff. In addition, the Institute has a thriving Visiting Scholars Program.

The Evidence in Governance and Politics (EGAP) program is housed at IGS. EGAP is a cross-disciplinary network of researchers and practitioners which is united by a focus on experimental research and is dedicated to generating and disseminating rigorous evidence on topics of governance, politics, and institutions. We seek to forge partnerships between researchers and practitioners committed to understanding the politics of global development, advance evidence-based policy making, and improve the quality of empirical research in the social sciences. EGAP members are designing and implementing field experiments throughout the world. From impact evaluations of anti-poverty projects in developing countries, to get out the vote campaigns for national elections in the U.S., to anti-corruption campaigns in Brazil, our work addresses today's most important questions in the field of government and politics. Results from research are shared with policy makers and development agencies through regular policy fora, biannual meetings, and policy briefs.

Responsibilities
Organizes all of EGAP's member meetings and special events (three membership meetings per year plus a few special events). Point person to provide support to locally-based meeting hosts on logistical issues for meetings and events. Coordinates local logistics with universities, hotels, caterers, restaurants, etc. Prepares event materials such as programs, name tents, relevant EGAP documents, etc. Post-event, submits and processes meeting reimbursements, vendor payments, and invoices. Updates EGAP website with related content. Liaises with UC Berkeley Campus Shared Services to handle expenses.

Primary organizational contact for EGAP members. Responds to membership inquiries and issues. EGAP membership coordination, outreach, onboarding, and additional event planning. Establishes processes for member feedback through surveys and other tools. Facilitates communications related to events and other activities. This includes facilitating the production and circulation of meeting agendas, e-books, signage, and email publicity; sending out announcements and other information via Mailchimp or other similar software.

Coordinates the EGAP peer response mechanism and related online mini-workshops.

Manages membership recruitment processes in coordination with executive officers and committees. Manages elections for executive positions and committees.

Metric management and tracking for donors and program communications.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Two years of experience including internships
  • This outward-facing position will be the spirit behind the organization. The candidate must be very professional, polite, and patient with thorough knowledge of basic concepts, principles, and procedures of building and maintaining effective relations with internal and external constituencies
  • Detail-oriented
  • Event planning experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to the professional development of the members
  • Must be interested and able to travel domestically and/or internationally 5-10% of the time
  • Strong communications skills
  • Ability to work successfully in intercultural environments and across multiple time zones
  • Demonstrated interest in area of governance and politics and monitoring and evaluation will be highly beneficial to this individual. Thorough written, verbal and interpersonal communications, tact and political acumen to effectively represent EGAP and the campus
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills, including sound judgment and decision-making skills and skill to correctly identifying real and potential problems, advising management as required, and proposing effective strategic resolutions.
  • Skill in project management, including event planning and meeting deadlines
