Job Details

Executive Director
University of California, Los Angeles

Requisition Number: 30728
Salary: $6,667 - $13,166 monthly

Position Description:
The Academic Senate exercises direct control over degree and program requirements and admissions standards as delegated directly by The Regents. The Senate has final authority for the approval and supervision of courses and the review of all academic departments and programs. The Senate's Council on Academic Personnel recommends all faculty appointments and it reviews all academic promotions and tenure decisions. The Senate exercises a formal advisory role in budget matters and the administration of the libraries and, through its governance committees, conducts investigations regarding complaints made against members of the faculty. In addition, the Senate advises on a variety of issues affecting faculty welfare and the academic environment, and assists in searches and reviews of deans, chancellors, and presidents.

The Executive Director reports directly to the Chair of the Academic Senate and serves as the chief policy analyst, chief financial/budget analyst, and chief of staff for the organization. Because the Chair of the Senate and the chairs of the Senate's Councils and Committees rotate each year, the authority and responsibility of the Executive Director are considerable. The Executive Director's role can be divided into two main categories, which are closely interrelated:

1. Providing leadership, institutional memory, consultation, and continuity to the Senate organization in support of the Senate Chair, the other Officers of the Senate, and the Executive Board. In this role, the Executive Director must develop an advanced expertise in the area of University governance and structure in order to be able to provide oversight of Senate-wide initiatives, filter and delegate tasks and requests coming into the Senate, assist the Chair to prioritize activities and set agendas for meetings, serve as the chief policy analyst for the Chair, and represent the Senate in discussions of policy and planning with other UC campuses, the Office of the President, and the UCLA faculty, deans, vice chancellors, and executive vice chancellor, and other administrative and academic offices.

2. Managing the Academic Senate office. This role includes management of office operations to further the mission of the Senate, chief budget and finance officer, personnel management, systems design and information services, and supervision of the Senate staff members.

Working at University of California, Los Angeles

UCLA is a public research university located in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. It was founded in 1919 and is the second oldest of the ten campuses affiliated with the University of California system. UCLA offers over 300 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a wide range of disciplines and enrolls about 26,000 undergraduate and about 12,000 graduate students from the United States and around the world every year.

The UCLA College of Letters and Science has 34 academic departments and 900 faculty, and houses the majority of UCLA's 129 undergraduate majors as well as the students in the Graduate Division of Letters and Sciences. The UCLA College Honors Program is also housed in the College. The College of Letters and Science's programs are divided into five academic divisions: humanities, social sciences, life sciences, physical sciences, and the International Institute. UCLA also offers certificate programs, undergraduate degree-credit and continuing education credits for non-full-time students through its UCLA Extension education program.

The campus' location in Los Angeles makes excursions to local museums, theaters, or other entertainment venues relatively quick and easy.
