The Stanford Women's Community Center (WCC) is a dynamic and innovative space that employs a mission-driven, solution-oriented, positive, feminist approach to addressing issues related to gender and equity at Stanford and beyond. Specifically, the mission of the WCC is to facilitate growth and engagement for Stanford students around issues of gender, equity, identity, and justice, by building community and providing innovative opportunities to explore scholarship, leadership, and activism. The WCC is one of the seven Centers for Equity, Community, and Leadership, within the division of Student Affairs.


The WCC is responsible for a wide variety of campus-wide programs for both undergraduate and graduate students and has a solid reputation for effectively addressing current needs and issues through ever-evolving programming and staying relevant to today's students. Programs and services of the Women's Community Center are aligned with the Aims of a Stanford Education and provide students with various opportunities to own knowledge, hone skills and competencies, cultivate personal and social responsibility and participate in adaptive learning.


We are looking for qualified candidates who can support and build upon the core mission and work of the WCC. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of student development, a well-developed sense of political acumen, is forward-thinking, highly organized, intellectually curious, service-oriented, well-versed in feminist theory and social justice concepts, and has a strong ability to work collaboratively within a diverse community and with a wide range of people.


This is a full-time position, with an anticipated start date of September 2019.


Job Purpose:


Reporting to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of the Women's Community Center and working alongside the Assistant Director of the Women's Community Center, the Assistant Dean & Associate Director (“AD”) will be responsible for working collaboratively with the Director and Assistant Director to plan and implement all facets of the WCC as it pertains to the mission.


The AD administers, implements and interprets university and department policies and procedures. The AD identifies, clarifies, and resolves highly visible or complex issues with substantial significance and impact that may span multiple areas, using advanced technical and professional knowledge requiring independent judgment. The AD will also be responsible for supervision of student staff, general campus programming, and outreach; representation at division-wide and campus-wide meetings; and will coordinate the financial and administrative functions of the WCC. The AD will assist in the development and implementation of policies and practices that foster greater university-wide appreciation for the educational, social, cultural, and policy needs identified by the community of students interested in gender, equity, identity, and justice at Stanford.


Job Responsibilities:



Support and advise WCC student staff, interns, programs, and affiliated student organizations:

Manage an area or program in student services:

  • Work collaboratively with the Director, Assistant Director, and student staff to plan and execute cultural, academic, and educational programs with university-wide impact to meet the goals of the WCC;
  • Purposefully promote an inclusive learning environment for all students that encourages personal growth, self-reflection, critical thinking, and academic and personal success;

  • Foster a collaborative environment connecting students and organizations with one another to work together on related programs or projects within the WCC.

Develop and implement programming; make strategic recommendations for future programs:
  • Supervise and advise 3-5 student coordinators for a range of programs and services including, but not limited to the following areas: Academic Program, Intern Program, Mentorship & Career Pathways Program, and WVSO (Women's Voluntary Student Organization) Leadership Program;

  • Assess impact of programming and work collaboratively with the Director and Assistant Director to implement strategic changes as needed.

Direct the work of other staff; contribute to the development of staff training programs:
  • Work collaboratively with the Director and Assistant Director to recruit, hire, and train student employees each year;

  • Work collaboratively with the Director and Assistant Director to develop comprehensive training for student employees and interns, including orientation to the work, mission, and goals of the WCC; includes the planning and implementation of an annual staff retreat at the beginning of the academic year as well as staff training, staff meetings, and mini-retreats throughout the year.

Provide direct advice to students on a range of issues including, but not limited to, academic progress, academic program policies, career plans, accessibility, community standards, etc. in order to assist them in making appropriate choices and decisions:
  • Advise a wide range of voluntary student organizations affiliated with the WCC on major event planning, organizational development, fundraising, recruiting, membership retention, leadership development, and University policy for activities on campus;

  • Advise students on how to identify and secure resources necessary to achieve successful programs and how to build efficient and effective organizations.

Apprise students of research, fellowship and scholarship opportunities, make recommendations and may award grants:
  • Working collaboratively with the Director and Assistant Director, manage the outreach, recruitment, application, and selection for the Advancing Gender Equity Fellowship.

Engage in critical analysis of student and program concerns to resolve substantial issues which may span multiple areas, using advanced technical and professional knowledge.

Manage WCC internal operations:


Manage financial processes and development of budgets:

  • Manage all of the center's operating and gift accounts; allocate money for programs;

  • Regularly reconcile budgets, including quarterly budget check-ins with students;

  • Originate and approve transactions (Procurement Cards, Expense Requests, fund transfers, reimbursements, honorariums, etc.);

  • Ensure that the center stays within spending limits.

Evaluate and determine recommendations on technology resources, negotiate with resources options and vendors; oversee key processes:
  • Purchase office supplies, capital, and non-capital equipment as necessary;
  • Manage and oversee the facility and usage by students and other organizations;

  • Assist visitors to the WCC and provide introduction to services/programs.

Represent the WCC and connect with colleagues and affiliated departments:


Manage outreach programs, relationships with external community and university liaisons:

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with constituencies across campus.

Provide consulting advice to internal and external organizations; act as subject matter expert in a specialized field:
  • Serve as a liaison and campus partner to various constituencies and organizations concerned with sexual assault prevention education and awareness programs and other programs related to gender and/or gender-based violence;

  • Serve as a representative of the Women's Community Center for a variety of campus-wide programs including the Big 5 Events on campus (New Student Orientation, Reunion Homecoming, Family Weekend, Admit Weekend, Commencement), and major events organized by the WCC;

  • Lead university-wide teams and projects; represent the WCC at meetings and conferences; represent the university to external constituents.

Other duties may also be assigned.



To be successful in this position you will bring:


  • A Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant full time experience, or combination of equivalent work and educational experience, required.
  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, at all levels of management;
  • Ability and willingness to learn and use Stanford financial systems;
  • An understanding and knowledge of feminist theory, intersectionality, and other identity-based theoretical frameworks, as well as social justice approaches in an interdisciplinary context;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to review and analyze complex information;
  • Knowledge of the challenges faced by undergraduate and graduate students in a highly selective residential institution and ability to assist students in navigating this environment;
  • Understanding of social justice work, including but not limited to the role of ethnic and identity based centers on a college campus;
  • Strong critical thinking skills, including ability to retain and synthesize information, draw conclusions and make recommendations based on data (qualitative and quantitative);
  • Willingness to take on new challenges in a dynamic and changing environment;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with individuals and groups from various identities, cultures, and backgrounds;
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with students, faculty, and other constituents in a warm and professional manner;
  • Creativity, resourcefulness, initiative, discernment, and a high degree of motivation is required;
  • Ability to use a computer and technology for word processing, accounting; familiarity and proficiency with Google Docs and/or Box;
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.


In addition, our preferred requirements include:


  • A Master's degree in a related field strongly preferred. Related fields include: student affairs, higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, psychology, feminist/women's studies, gender studies, ethnic studies, history/American history, etc.;
  • Student development knowledge and experience in student affairs;


Working Conditions:


  • Some programs, events and services requiring the AD's presence are scheduled during evenings and weekends.
