Associate Director of Student Life - Staten Island


General Description:

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs this professional position will play a pivotal role in the development and management of campus life programming. The Associate Director will provide leadership to collaborative efforts in these units to create social vibrancy as well as to enhance campus traditions. The job portfolio includes: management of large-scale events, providing leadership to resident and commuter student activities, supervision of Student Life Graduate Assistants (GAs). The Associate Director also provides oversight to the following areas: campus recreation, Fraternity and Sorority Life and Campus Activities Board (CAB). S/he will develop a comprehensive menu of programs and activities that is based on strategic planning and assessment as well as the Mission of the University and the Division of Student Affairs. The Associate Director will also serve as the primary person responsible for all departmental marketing and technology needs. The Associate Director will supervise several Graduate Assistants (GAs) and student workers.

Responsibilities:

 

 

  • Responsible for managing and implementing a comprehensive array of campus-wide events and programs with a specific focus on evening and weekend programming which engages both residential and commuter students.
  • Oversee all signature programs (i.e. Winter Carnival, Family Weekend).
  • Prepare, monitor and maintain oversight of the campus activities Provide financial and statistical reports, projections, and recommendations as needed.
  • Encourage collaboration across Staten Island campus and other campuses to ensure seamless and consistent implementation of best practices in Campus Activities.
  • Serve as primary liaison between Student Life and Student Government, to ensure consistent policies and procedures for student organizations.
  • Manage MVP Program for Student Life.
  • Develop a comprehensive Student and Parent/Family Orientation Program.
  • Recruitment, selection and training of Orientation leaders.
  • Provide front-line supervision of all Student and Parent/Family Orientation Program.
  • Compile and report statistical data regarding all Student and Parent/Family Orientation programs.
  • Oversee the daily function of Campus Recreation through the supervision of the Graduate Assistant in charge of the following Campus Recreation duties:
    • Maintain inventory of Fitness Center, Gymnasium and Game room equipment and coordinate open recreation events and weekly programs in all of these locations.
    • Coordinate and oversee the No Excuse Fitness Class Program.
    • Plan and coordinate a comprehensive intramural sports program.
    • Provide an intramural sports program that is fun, safe, competitive, and meets the needs of the entire St. John's University community.
    • Schedule all intramural leagues, tournaments, and related staff.
    • Track and report league standings and relevant statistics.
    • Accurately track all intramural equipment and accessories.
  • Evaluate programs and make recommendations each semester and annually.
  • Recommend and assist with rules and policy development for recreational facilities and intramural programs.
  • Advise and mentor approximately 40 student clubs and Oversee approval process of new and returning organizations.
  • Advise student publications (e.g., Newspaper, Yearbook) the Campus Activities Board and Performing Arts Program.
  • Advise all Fraternities and Sororities, Inter-Sorority Council, and Greek Honor Societies.
  • Engage in regular evaluation and assessment of the effectiveness of programs and services.
  • Generate reports detailing grade point average, recruitment, and membership statistics.
  • Manage and facilitate resolution of crisis situations. Collaborate with Public Safety to manage the policy enforcement.
  • Maintain all departmental Marketing needs including management of Graphics Team and the development of all departmental publications, including social media applications (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, etc,.)
  • Oversee and facilitate student organization communication, including OrgSync, the mailbox system, submissions to John' s Central, the University web page, and the Master Calendar.
  • Collaborate with Academic Affairs to create programming which engages faculty and students outside of the traditional classroom environment.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Student Affairs.

 


Qualifications:

Master's degree in Higher Education or a related field required and a minimum of three-five years of professional experience in a college or university in the areas of: Student Life, Student Activities , Greek Life, and Student Development.

Strong organizational and supervisory skills. The ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with students.
