Assistant Director, University Career Services - Staten Island


General Description:

Reporting to the Director of University Career Services - SI Campus, the Assistant Director is a highly visible position within the Staten Island campus of St. John's University. This relationship-focused role has an emphasis on ensuring student internship and job readiness, while also expanding career opportunities. The overall performance standard for this position is a measurable increase in student participation in Career Services programs, internships, and job placement statistics.

Responsibilities:

 

 

 

  • Develop innovative, scalable ways to deliver programming and provide career-related development and services to Staten Island (SI) students and recent alumni.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, tracking and assessment of programming.
  • Provide comprehensive individual and group advisement sessions to target population(s).
  • Administer and interpret assessments such as the MBTI and Strong Interest Inventory.
  • Act as main department liaison to academic advisors and faculty.
  • Work closely with college academic advisors to ensure seamless career developmental advising of students.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to facilitate student learning by assisting students to secure appropriate mentoring, internship, shadowing, and work experiences to enhance overall academic experiences and learn skills essential to successful employment.
  • Facilitate involvement of faculty in academically targeted career events and coordinate with faculty to plan classroom presentations.
  • Coach students to begin their professional network by facilitating connections with employers and referring students to ongoing career advisement.
  • Identify and encourage participation in internship programs and encourage and promote experiential learning opportunities for students outside of the classroom, including community service, undergraduate research, national/international scholarship competitions, and study abroad programs.
  • Monitor student interests and workplace/industry trends in order to guide programmatic initiatives.
  • Assist with assessment of student learning outcomes.

 


Other Areas:

 

 

 

 

  • Hire, train and develop, supervise, and evaluate office Graduate Assistants and/or Career Peers.
  • In conjunction with Director, oversee Leadership Development Programming for the Staten Island campus, including but not limited to, advising and coordinating activities for Omicron Delta Kappa and/or the National Society of Leadership and Success.
  • In conjunction with the Director, support strategic employer communications; and host and/or visit businesses, government and other organizations to develop opportunities.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of recruiting and market trends in various industries.
  • Represent University Career Services and St. John's University to constituents at events such as Open House, Accepted Students Day, and other university and community events.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

 

 


Qualifications:

 

 

 

 

  • Bachelor' s Degree required. Master's degree preferred.
  • 6 years of professional experience in career development and/or job search counseling, corporate recruiting, human resources; or the equivalent.
  • Cutting-edge approach to empowering students to navigate the path from college to career successfully.
  • Demonstrated ability to network among internal and external constituent groups.
  • Contemporary knowledge of career services, including: career advising and development; current world of work and employment, internships, and similar experiential programs; employer relations and cultivation; and professional and graduate school advising.
  • Polished presentation skills to small and large groups.
  • Versatile team player who excels in relationship-building.
  • Extremely well-organized with excellent follow-through ability.
  • Ability to effectively manage large programs, multiple tasks and competing priorities.
  • Proficient in the use of web based software. Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel required. Knowledge of Banner preferred. Knowledge of Handshake preferred.
  • Excellent resume, interviewing and job search skills required.
  • Professional demeanor and excellence in oral and written communications required.
  • Prefer familiarity with faith-based organizations.
  • Some local travel required.
  • Evening and weekend work required.
