Communications Associate

General Summary/Purpose:


This position will partner and liaise with internal and external constituents with the purpose of strengthening Johns Hopkins Carey Business School's engagement initiatives with alumni, faculty, students, employers, and the extended community. The Communications Associate will work with constituent Carey departments in a consultative capacity on strategic communications planning and execution to ensure cohesive tone and messaging as well as timely completion of deliverables. The position will oversee integrated communications activities, sponsorship marketing opportunities, speaker series, storytelling efforts, academic conferences, and other special events including cultivating potential speakers, devising engagement plan, and execution of messaging, production, and final evaluation.

The position will also work with the Executive Director, Director of Communications and the Marketing and Communications team and liaise with senior leadership to communicate, research, write, and edit compelling content for communications and marketing materials, including but not limited to short feature articles/blogs, internal communications, speaker's remarks, website copy, advertisements, social media, and emails. The position will serve as a liaison for any of a number of Carey Departments at both the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. campuses, as well as partnering with Carey's events team and other external stakeholders.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

60% Consulting and Liaison Activities:

  • Partner with constituent Carey departments on initiatives, serving as a strategic communications subject matter expert managing various communications among key stakeholders including staff, faculty, students, and alumni.
  • Develop and maintain project management tools to enable cohesive long-term communications strategy with timely deliverables for constituent departments and external partners.
  • Manage integrated communications and outreach activities for academic conferences, and other speaker series, including planning, speaker curation, marketing, communications, and event activities.
  • Represent Carey within the greater Johns Hopkins community and strengthen network and collaboration through student partnerships, connecting faculty participation, and events.
  • In partnership with leadership, develop and execute the outreach strategy for high profile and public facing events and sponsorship marketing opportunities.

    35% Core Writing and Communications Research Activities:
  • Communicate, research, write, and edit compelling content for communications and marketing materials, including but not limited to short feature articles/blogs, internal communications, leadership and speaker's remarks, websites, advertisements, social media, and emails.
  • Recommend appropriate communications and marketing approach based on experience and knowledge of industry.
  • Provide weekly market research on higher education industry trends to be used in determining communications strategies.
  • Conduct research including focus groups or other evaluations to monitor student, faculty and staff, alumni and employers response to new initiatives/programs.
  • Identify and generate compelling stories from the greater Carey community, including features on faculty and students and broader community outreach.

    5% Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):


  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Four years related experience required.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

    JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years of related experience in marketing, public relations, or communications preferred, preferably in higher education or corporate environment.
  • Experience writing for and working with high profile clients.

    Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills, including ability to interact with all levels of employees, students, executives, and high-level external stakeholders while maintaining professionalism
  • Solutions-oriented approach to communications strategy
  • Strong knowledge of marketing communications
  • Experience with internal and external communications planning, storytelling, and messaging
  • Working knowledge of digital platforms and outlets, and ability to creatively leverage their reach to achieve internal and external messaging goals
  • Comfortable negotiating with corporate stakeholders, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information, diplomacy, tact, and professionalism in actions and appearance.
  • Strong project management skills and demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Proven ability to juggle quick deadlines with multiple projects and deadlines, combining speed and excellence in performance while maintaining composure and flexibility
  • Resourcefulness, attention to detail, and follow-through
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team with a results-oriented approach
  • Ability to facilitate problem resolution and foster confidence and trust.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member and manage confidential information and sensitive situations.

    Starting Salary Range: $58,695 - $67,000 per year

    During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

    The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
