Departmental Overview
Digital Learning Services (DLS) is a department within Research, Teaching and Learning that provides design, production, delivery and digital tools services for common good digital learning and revenue generating online learning at UC Berkeley. DLS partners with schools and departments throughout the university and UC system to build online education courses and programs of exceptional quality. Responsibilities
  • Develops and implements comprehensive short and long-range strategic digital learning programs and projects.
  • Assesses daily the design, development, and production needs of assigned portfolios, projects and courses.
  • Sets short-term design, development, and production support tasks, goals and objectives and executes on them.
  • Reports status of projects, plans hourly budgets of projects, and produces scope of work and timelines in collaboration with a cross functional internal team as well as collaborating with staff, faculty, Department Chairs and Deans.
  • Researches, develops, and produces digital learning content for online and blended courses.
  • Designs, develops, produces and delivers digital learning content using WCAG 2.0 AA standards; principals of visual and instructional design; Canvas, edX, and Moodle learning management systems; and synchronous/asynchronous and timeline based media.
  • Produces digital learning content including the design, graphics and layout of course sites, multimedia, video, simulations, and interactive assets.
  • Produces and collaborates on the production of digital learning media in all phases, pre-production, production, and postproduction, including script writing, storyboarding, graphic treatments, on camera coaching, directing, and technical lighting and visual composition.
  • Provides expertise, coaching and support to faculty and instructional teams during the digital learning production process.
  • Writes and configures complex learning and educational materials to utilize digital learning resources and online course environments to their full potential.
  • Writes, produces, and reviews digital copy and content with high-level of detail and accuracy.
  • Maintains and develops complex online learning course digital media content and
    resources with broad audience of learners, including graduate, undergraduate and public learners, and a high consequence of error affecting student learning outcomes and success.
  • Responds to sensitive public and UC Berkeley student and faculty inquiries submitted via the web, email, bCourses or the help desk ensuring tact, diplomacy, and political acumen while maintaining institutional integrity.
  • Consults with management and other professionals to develop strategic digital learning plans,
    programs or projects for Master's Degrees, undergraduate courses, and public courses, including new content, digital pedagogy practices and policies, innovations, and to ensure that digital learning content meets campus needs and effectively delivers the desired learning outcome opportunities.
  • Maintains currency with emerging and state-of-the-art technical and other web-related
    software and applications, requirements and developments including but not limited to WCAG 2.0 AA standards, interactive learning tools, adaptive learning, virtual and augmented reality and recommends or implements actions.
  • Maintains currency with visual design, typography, and composition skills to interpret written concepts and transform them into compelling visuals and current trends in learning design.

    Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of the fundamentals of writing and editorial style, and skill to write in a clear and lively style.
  • Advanced skill in creating clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed,
    and highly functional digital learning content.
  • Advanced understanding of technical language and requirements of the assigned work including WCAG 2.0 AA standards; principals of visual and instructional design; video platforms and cloud distribution; and synchronous/asynchronous, timeline based, and interactive online learning tools and authoring tools, lighting and frame composition.
  • Advanced knowledge of electronic communication media, including content management systems and/or relevant web applications used for web site production, and campus-specific
    computer application programs.
  • Advanced technical skills in computer applications for web production including Adobe's Creative Cloud apps, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and/or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
  • Advanced understanding of campus processes, procedures, and applicable rules and regulations for web communications.
  • Advanced knowledge of the campus, including its achievements, goals, objectives, vision and mission and how electronic communications can effectively convey and advance the campus message to various audiences.
  • Advanced skill to monitor and assess processes or services and make necessary improvements.
  • Advanced project management skills to complete projects within budget and time constraints.
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills and collaboration skills, including political acumen and skill in troubleshooting and applying proactive and positive solutions.

    Education/Training
  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using applications like Harvest to track time on projects for billing and applications like Basecamp for task, project and collaborative team communication of digital projects.
